Claim up to £400 cashback on your Sony accessories until March

If you buy an FS5 or FS7 between 1st December 2017 and 31st March 2018, Sony will give you up to £400 cashback against a huge range of their accessories. This effectively means you get up to £400 worth of accessories for free, making it the most cost effective way to a) kit out your camera or b) buy everyone you know a memory card for Christmas (full disclosure: we tried this last year, responses were… not excellent).

What do I have to do?

All you have to is purchase an eligible camera and accessories at the same time, at some point before 31st March (the camera and accessories need to be on the same invoice). As a Sony authorised dealer, we keep a range of the eligible models in stock and ready to deliver, so you could be enjoying your new camera and accessories in days.

You’ll then need to send Sony a scan of your invoice and pictures of the serial numbers of the products you’ve bought, which you can do by filling out the participation form here. You’ll need to have submitted this by 30th April 2018 to claim your cash.

Which models are eligible?

More specifically, anyone buying the FS5 or FS5K can claim £220 cashback, while anyone buying a Sony FS7, FS7 Mk II, or FS7K Mk II can claim £400. It’s worth bearing in mind that you’re claiming cash back against the value of the accessories, not the camera, so if you buy an FS7 and £200 worth of accessories, you can only claim £200 back.

The full list of eligible accessories is available here, and includes batteries, chargers, lenses, adaptors, mics, media and mounts, so there’s something for everyone.

ZEISS’s new CP.3 XD lenses explained

ZEISS’s new CP.3 XD lenses boast eXtended Data – new metadata that provides frame-accurate information about the shading and distortion properties of each individual lens, along with metadata about focal length, calibrated T-stop value and focusing distance. We sat down with ZEISS’s Luke Tait to find out what this means for you.

So, how does eXtended Data work?

It’s based on Cooke /i technology, so the lenses communicate with the camera through the mount, with information on where they’re focused (accurate to 1mm) and what the iris is set to (accurate to within one tenth of a stop).

What XD does is take that communication a lot further. Each individual lens has its shading and distortion characteristics measured at factory level, so the lens knows all that stuff about itself. When you plug in to the XD port on the camera, it can communicate that information to software in post, or those characteristics can be seen and changed live on set.

How is this going to affect production?

It allows you to change the look of a shot quite dramatically on set. Not only can you remove the distortion and shading, but you can exaggerate it, and really change the way the lens looks.

And because that circuitry’s inside the lens now, we can release firmware updates and plug-ins to make them do other things. People have suggested built-in ND effects, so they can slide in ND changes in production or post without having to use other glass or a matte box – we want to keep everything light and easy for drone shooting. The potential for us to add more information and characteristics into the XDs is what makes them exciting. It makes them very future proof.

Presumably the idea is a big hit with post houses?

It’s particularly useful for VFX and augmented reality stuff – Ember Films recently used the XD lenses to recreate the HALO drop scene from the Godzilla movie, which is very VFX heavy. Using XD lenses saved them a lot of time in post, because they could dial out all the distortion and shading characteristics of the lens, do their VFX and then put that information back in to maintain the look of the lenses.

Sensors are getting bigger and higher res, therefore the time needed in post is getting longer because the information is more cumbersome. Anything that can save time in post is useful, and these lenses can do that.

Blackmagic Design have announced that they’re building XD integration into Resolve. Are you dealing with any other manufacturers?

We want XD to be universal, so we’re talking to every camera and software manufacturer – NUKE support is next.

The CP.2 was extremely popular. Why did you decide it was time to move on?

The CP.2 is ten years old, and we’re always asking ourselves ‘how can we improve our products? What’s going on in the world that we need to respond to?’ And the main things were the amount of drone footage people shoot, and the amount of handheld gimbal work that’s going on, both of which mean we need to make our lenses smaller and lighter – that’s something we’ve done on the standard CP.3s and the XD versions.

The CP.3 is available in XD and non-XD models. What are the new features can we look forward to besides the XD port?

One of the niggles people had with the CP.2 was the focusing, which could be quite stiff, particularly if you were somewhere cold. So we’ve taken some technologies from our Ultra Prime and Master Prime lenses and put them into the CP.3, so the focus is silky smooth. We’ve also updated the coatings on every single bit of glass inside the lens, which means that it’s a lot sharper. They deal with flares and aberrations better. So overall: lighter, smaller, cheaper, smoother, sharper.

But people can still expect that the CP.3 will shoot like the CP.2?

There are a lot of good things about the CP.2 that we’ve maintained. So the out of focus qualities are beautiful – it’s really en vogue at the moment to have nice looking bokeh, and the out of focus bits on the CP.2 are beautiful, they have a really cinematic look to them, and we’ve kept that.

We kept the interchangeable mount system. A lot of our customers use different cameras for different jobs, which usually means you have to invest in a lot of lenses. But with the CP.3 and the CP.3 XD you can just change the mount – if you’re using an FS7, you can put an E mount on it, and then if you’re using a RED EPIC DRAGON, you can swap that out for a PL mount.

Get HDR ready with the latest from Atomos, Sony, Blackmagic Design and more!

HDR has taken the industry by storm, and makes such a difference to the quality of your images that soon we’ll be wondering how we got by without it. To get the latest tips on getting the most out of your HDR-capable technology, we brought in the experts and laid out the kit for our drop-in session on utilising your Atomos monitor and recorder to create HDR content.

Why is HDR so important?

HDR is arguably the biggest step forward for moving pictures in a generation. New standards set in REC.2100 take advantage of the luminance and colour reproduction capabilities of modern displays to produce high levels of brightness, contrast and colour volume, leading to images that closely resemble what our eyes naturally see.

Content producers have long been working with high dynamic range source material through Log and RAW captured images. But output and delivery standards haven’t progressed much for decades, meaning we’ve spent years compromising. HDR is a new way forward as it is a resolution independent technology, with the new standards outlined in REC.2100 being applicable to both 1080p (HD), UltraHD and 4K – even 8K come 2020.

Unlike previous technological progression that required significant hardware overhauls, HDR doesn’t require lots of new hardware. The most significant piece of new kit is the display we monitor HDR material on, and how we process the signal to see the images we are creating appropriately. This is where Atomos, one of the fastest growing companies in pro video, are pushing the envelope in the field, on set and in the studio.

Get HDR ready with our favourite camcorders

Camera-wise, we had some of the newest models to be announced, plus some of our old favourites. The new Canon Cinema EOS C200 camcorder is the latest in the EOS range, big brother to the very popular C100 MK II and following in the footsteps of the C300 MK II. Zeiss announce new Loxia 2.4/85 telephoto lens, plus new Milvus additions

Zeiss have just announced some new additions to their lens lineup, with the Loxia 2.4/85 telephoto lens, and three new additions to the Milvus range in 2.8/15, 2.8/18 and 2.0/135 flavours. And they’ll all be shipping in time for Christmas. 

The Zeiss Loxia 2.4/85 lens

The Loxia range are perfect for both photography and video, being both compact and portable, as well as the most affordable of Zeiss’s high quality lenses. Now, joining the current Loxia 2.8/21, Loxia 2.0/35 and Loxia 2.0/50 is this new focal length in 85mm moderate telephoto, the Zeiss Loxia 2.4/85. It features:

Optimised Zeiss Sonnar design. Designed for digital sensors, with a minimum object distance of 0.80 metres and a manual focus ring with 220 degrees rotation for subtle focusing, large aperture and high-quality optical design for appealing bokeh, and electronic interface to transfer lens data (EXIF) and focus movements, and activate the camera’s magnification.

Great video features. The lens is designed for video as well as photography, in particular, mirrorless full-frame cameras with E-mount like the Sony PXW-FS7 and PXW-FS5. Video-friendly features include the De-Click function which lets you mechanically deactivate the click stops on the aperture ring for silent and smooth adjustments of the aperture while you’re filming, and a robust but compact design.

Zeiss Lens Gears. Loxia lenses can also be used with a follow focus system. Slide the Lens Gears onto your lens to mount your follow focus system for the precise focusing you’d get from a full-scale cine lens. The Zeiss Lens Gear Rings in the sizes mini (62 – 69mm, 60 – 67mm with GumGum) will fit Loxia lenses.

New Zeiss Milvus lenses

Zeiss also announced the addition of three new lenses to the Milvus family of manual focus lenses optimised for high-resolution DSLR cameras – with two super-wide angle lenses, the Zeiss Milvus 2.8/15 and Zeiss Milvus 2.8/18, and the telephoto lens Zeiss Milvus 2.0/135.

All three lenses feature the floating elements design and ZEISS T anti-reflective coating for outstanding bokeh and a high degree of control over ghosting, flare or shading effects. Dust and water spray protection means they’re great for outdoor use too. On top of that, the Milvus 2.8/18 also boasts a newly-calculated Distagon optical design and now offers full-frame coverage.

If you’re after the lowdown on all new Zeiss’s lenses, then look no further. We caught up with Zeiss’ Luke Tait who talked all about the shiny new Batis range and NAB 2016.

Jigsaw24: It’s an exciting time for Zeiss!

Luke: It is, there’s a lot to talk about.

So let’s get right to it, how does the Batis 2.8/18 fit in with the rest of the Zeiss Batis range?

Well, the 18mm Batis is the widest full frame prime lens currently available. With its extremely wide 99 degree field of view, it is well suited for astrophotography, interior and architectural photography.

Batis is a bit of an odd name, where did that come from?

Just like the other families of Zeiss lenses, Batis is the latin name for a species of bird. Batis (pronounced BAT-iss) is a genus of passerine in the wattle-eye family – it’s found south of the Sahara. 

So just how important is the OLED display to show the focus distance and depth of field?

The OLED display is very useful as it gives information on the distance to the subject and depth of field. Once you’ve used it, you won’t want to go back.

How do you think the lens was received at NAB?

The lenses were received very well. There was a lot of buzz surrounding the lenses when we were in Vegas, from both photographers and videographers. We were very pleased with the warm reception we got at NAB.  

What do you think sets the Batis range apart from other, similar lenses?

First off, the Batis 2/25 and 1.8/85 are the very first full-frame autofocus lenses with an OLED display. Not only that, but the new Batis lenses are built for professional use, with extremely durable construction and excellent sharpness. It’s everything you could want, and it’s pioneering a new era.

So, tell us, when can we get our hands on one?

The lenses have already started to ship!

Hosted by pro storm chaser Alister Chapman, our FS5 Fiesta brought some of the hottest Sony camcorder kit to Soho. Guests got the lowdown on the cameras and learnt some handy techniques and tips to boot, all while enjoying tapas and a few beers. 

First off, we’d like to thank everyone who made it there on the day! Alister kicked off the event by imparting his filmic wisdom, dropping his knowledge on lens options, variable ND, clear image zoom, super slow mo, picture profile settings, gamma curves, Cinegammas, S-log and S-log2 and much more. As a storm chaser and someone who’s been apart of the Sony ecosystem for years, Alister knows all about Sony camcorders and the intricacies of using them and we’re confident our guests will be making use of the cool tips he was dishing out.

Alister wasted no time showing the audience how to get the very best out of the Sony PXW-FS5, and demonstrated some impressive footage of the Geysir in Iceland where he’d made use of the super slow mo and end trigger settings. The Sony PXW-FS7 also made an appearance, as guests had the chance to get their hands on both of Sony’s video cameras and put their questions to the expert. Atomos brought along their Shogun 4K recorder and monitor, while Rotolight brought their NEO lights kit along to the event. In addition, we had some top of the range lenses from Zeiss on display, which work perfectly with Sony camcorders – remember, every top quality camera is only as good as the lens attached to it!

We’ve released the models, sent our demo units back on the road and written John Harrison a long and embarrassing fan letter, but there is one thing left to do: thank you, the people, for bearing witness to our epic 4K Shootout last week. 

As well as cameras from JVC, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, AJA and Blackmagic, we managed to round up some of the best peripherals available (Zeiss, Samyang and Tokina glass, Atomos DTEs, Dedolite and Kinoflo lights, Libec tripods, IDX charge kits, Shape rigs, Konova sliders and – last but not least – HPRC cases) so that visitors could try out the cameras fully rigged, and in a fully lit environment.

Award-winning cinematographer John Harrison was there to deliver two oversubscribed seminars on lighting for 4K. Sorry to everyone we had to turn away from the first session, but even our warren-like office can only hold so many people. Those who were lucky enough to make it in were treated to a lighting masterclass on how to make the best use of your Dedolight and Kinoflow kit when you’re shooting at high res, complete with some fascinating questions from a really engaged crowd. For those who like to keep track of these things, John was shooting on a Sony F55.

Downstairs in Wonderland, we had the shootout proper, with a Sony FS7, AJA Cion, Blackmagic Design URSA (hint, we have £1000 off these at the moment), Sony A7-S, Panasonic GH4 and JVC LS-300 all available for shooting. We’d rigged the cameras as far as possible, with a DTE on pretty much anything (thanks to Atomos for showing up in force with more toys than we knew what to do with).

We also had the incredible JVC GW-S100e 4K remote control camera system, which allows you to capture 4K footage remotely from what is possible the smallest MFT camera we’ve ever seen.

Thanks for everyone who was involved, from the vendors who bought their kit to those who showed up last minute for the beer and networking.
