If you’re an existing Xsan or ActiveSAN customer who’s worried about the lack of cover now that Active have closed their doors, you have a couple of options. The first is to give us a call to find out about our hardware support programme, which will cover your existing ActiveSAN kit even if you didn’t buy it from us. The other, recently-announced option, is to take a look at Quantum’s StorNext, which currently offers discounts of up to 60% to ActiveSAN or Xsan users.
What’s the deal?
Quantum is offering StorNext M440 Appliances, StorNext QX Storage high performance primary disk and StorNext AEL500 Mini Archive at discounted rates for ActiveSAN and Xsan users who want to move on a current system without sacrificing functionality. The exact discount will depend on your individual setup, what hardware you want to swap out and how many clients you need the software to support, but it could be as high as 60%.
What functionality does StorNext offer?
Basically, everything your ActiveSAN or Xsan does, but on a platform that’s currently supported and which lets you integrate Windows, OS X, Unix and Linux-based workstation into a single storage and asset management system. You can even use StorNext to allow your existing Xsan users access to applications and files stored on non-Apple devices and enabling high-speed automated transfers between Apple programs and those from Adobe, Autodesk and others, giving greater parity to all the artists in your studio and streamlining collaborative processes.
You can streamline things further by using StorNext’s integrated Metadata Appliances to create shared data pools for your teams, removing the need for multiple copies of work, and allowing large project files to be accessed quickly from any platform in your facility.
In terms of additional benefits over your existing setup, the highlights are distributed LAN channels for Windows and Linux platforms via StorNext Gateways. This offers you unlimited DLC client support for Windows, Linux and Unix clients, with automatic failover between units and load balancing for optimal performance. You can also integrate Mac clients over your LAN, and use StorNext Storage Manager to automatically create copies of your digital assets in tape or disk archives for data protection and disaster recovery (there’s also the option to use Storage Manager to bring HSM functionality to your storage workflow and automate the transfer of ageing assets to archives.
What support will I get?
Well, Quantum have no plans to change their lineup in the near future, so you’re guaranteed long-term support direct from the manufacturer, if that’s been a worry about your ActiveSAN or Xsan. Our in-house team of engineers can also support any hardware you have going: we’ll work with you to design, build, install and support your StorNext system, but can also provide hardware support contracts that’ll cover any existing Active hardware you continue to use, even if you didn’t originally buy it from us.
