IBC 2017: AJA announces desktop software v14 for KONA, Io and T-TAP products

AJA Video Systems today announced new Desktop Software v14 for its family of KONA, Io and T-TAP products. Desktop Software v14 adds new features that simplify 4K/UltraHD and HDR workflows, as well as new audio capabilities for individuals working in broadcast, TV, film, post-production, ProAV and OTT.

With the new capabilities for audio, the AJA Desktop Software allows Adobe Premiere Pro CC users to review and play audio files from multiple locations, including locally stored files, or via a MAM or web browser, within project timelines. The solution also makes it easier to record voiceovers into existing media directly on the Timeline. The solution allows Adobe Creative Cloud users to use Thunderbolt 3 via USB-C for video and audio I/O with leading macOS and PC workstations and laptops.

Desktop Software v14 will be available mid-October 2017 for AJA’s family of KONA, T-TAP and Io products, including the new Thunderbolt 3 enabled Io 4K Plus. New audio features enable simple, adjustable audio monitoring, giving editors new levels of control between professional timeline audio, host system application audio and microphone inputs. This update also supports full duplex, ultra-low latency voiceover/audio punch-in to timeline using either digital or analog audio inputs. AJA’s Control Panel and Control Room software also now support intuitive configurations for 12G, 6G and HDMI when used with Io 4K Plus.

Desktop v14 feature highlights include

– New audio controls to adjust the monitoring mix between the NLE timeline audio playback, host system audio and voiceover/punch-in mic input.

– Ability to audition music or other audio from a web browser/MAM/cloud, while listening to playback from an Adobe Premiere Pro CC or FCP X timeline.

– Record voiceovers to timeline with low latency, full duplex audio punch-in with Io 4K Plus, Io 4K and KONA 4 for Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Avid Media Composer.

– 12G-SDI, 6G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 I/O configuration controls for Io 4K Plus.

What’s new in NEXIS?

Avid have continued their trend of releasing clusters of updates for their NEXIS shared storage system, with recent additions taking us from NEXIS 7.1 to 7.4. Here’s what you’ll be able to enjoy once you’ve updated…

Avid NEXIS 7.1.1

The Avid NEXIS 7.1.1 patch releasencludes an important fix for Avid NEXIS systems with clients that inadvertently attempt to connect through a 100Mbps Ethernet connection. Anything other than 1Gb or 10Gb is not a supported connection speed, and the client would fail to connect. However, beginning with v5.0, the client’s attempt to connect at an unsupported speed caused the Storage Manager to assert and the Avid NEXIS system to become temporarily unresponsive. This fix prevents the system from asserting, and rejects the unsupported client connection. Those clients must modify their connection speeds to connect to Avid NEXIS.

Avid NEXIS 7.2

The Avid NEXIS v7.2 release includes support for adding Media Packs to a mirror-capable Storage Group during a maintenance window (no client I/O to Workspaces in that Storage Group). However, there are a few parameters: the Media Packs must be the same capacity as those already in the mirror- capable Storage Group, and each Engine you are adding to the mirror-capable Storage Group must have the same number of Media Packs as the Engines already in it.

For example, if a mirror-capable Storage Group contains three Avid NEXIS | E4 Engines each with two 60TB Media Packs, you can add another Avid NEXIS | E4 Engine with two 60TB Media Packs to the same mirror-capable Storage Group.

The update also adds: support for macOS Sierra (v10.12.2) clients; support for Avid NEXIS File Gateway software on an AS3000 Server, and open access to Avid NEXIS workspaces using the Avid NEXIS | File Gateway installed on that Avid AS3000 Server running Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. This allows access to Avid NEXIS from clients and infrastructures that do not have the Avid NEXIS Client installed.

The Avid NEXIS File Gateway server and software are available now and documentation is available on the Avid Knowledge Base. When interface checking in relation to redundant controller configurations, the default gateway IP address must be reachable by a ping command, otherwise the interface is disabled. This can cause the Avid NEXIS Engine or System Director Appliance to become disconnected from the network. Before upgrading to Avid NEXIS v7.2, make sure there is a default gateway IP address configured, and that it can be reached by a ping command. Avid NEXIS 7.3

With the arrival of NEXIS 7.3, the Avid NEXIS Client Kit is now available to download from the Avid Download Centre. Avid ISIS and Avid NEXIS customers can download and install the latest Avid NEXIS Client software, which connects to both Avid NEXIS and Avid ISIS (v4.7.5 and higher) systems.

Avid have fixed an issue introduced in Avid NEXIS v7.2 where the System Director was using the ping command to determine the presence and connectivity of the default gateway IP address, and counting on a valid address being configured. The ping command is no longer used to determine the presence or validity of a default gateway address. Avid recommends updating to Avid NEXIS v7.3 from v7.1 or earlier to avoid the possibility of losing access to the interface if no default gateway is configured, or if it is configured incorrectly.

They have also fixed an issue where the hardware status on the Agent was displaying incorrect or no information for the power supplies and fans in an Avid NEXIS | E5, an ‘Edit While Capture’ issue where constant reads of a data chunk led to a delayed write failure.

They have also added support for the following Myricom 10GbE Rev C NICs for use in Avid NEXIS clients: 10G-PCIE2-8C2-2T, 10G-PCIE2-8C-T and 10G-PCIE2-8C2-2S. The Myricom driver bundled with the Avid NEXIS kit works for these NICs.

Avid NEXIS 7.3.1

The Avid NEXIS v7.3.1 release fixes an issue in Avid NEXIS 7.2 and 7.3 where under some circumstances, including intermittent network connections, external user authentication using LDAP would fail. Update all client systems to Avid NEXIS Client v7.3.1 before updating the Avid NEXIS system to v7.3.1. The Avid NEXIS v7.3 client cannot connect to a system running Avid NEXIS v7.3.1 or higher.

Avid NEXIS 7.3.2

The Avid NEXIS v7.3.2 release fixed a timing issue where in some circumstances, an Avid Interplay Media Indexer would assert (blue screen).

Avid NEXIS 7.4

The Avid NEXIS v7.4 release adds support for CentOS Linux version 7.3 as a client operating system. Clients running CentOS and the Avid NEXIS v7.4 client software can connect to an Avid ISIS system running v4.7.5 and higher, and to any Avid NEXIS system. The CentOS client kit is available in the Installers page in the Management Console and also in the Installers_Client\ folder in the Avid NEXIS kit, and is named AvidNEXISClient_el.centos.x86_64_7.4.0_5.bin.

Avid Client software for Linux now displays and connects to more than 10 remote System Directors. Previous versions of the Linux client limited to 10 the number of remote System Director connections (and the number displayed in the Client Manager’s Systems pane). The Client Manager now displays and connects to as many remote System Directors as are configured in the Remote Hosts dialog box.

The release also fixes an edit-while-capture workflow problem involving clients using dual 1Gb connections to the Avid NEXIS.

At last year’s WWDC Apple announced that their new file system, APFS, would be replacing the age-old HFS+, which has underpinned their file system since 1998. It came to mobile devices with iOS 10.3, and is expected to make the jump to macOS at June’s WWDC event. So, with the mooted release date looming, how should companies be preparing for APFS? What considerations do you need to take into account? 

Key considerations

Data loss A developer beta has been available for a while now, and from what we’ve heard transitions have gone smoothly – Apple say they’ve built the system to avoid all data loss. However, being the cautious types we are, we can’t help but think a bit of pre-rollout preparation is for the best, especially if you’re in an enterprise environment.

Awareness of the impact on mixed estates and corporate services If your estate isn’t standardised, you’ll be handling a mixture of older machines using HFS+ and newer ones using APFS, and will need to offer parity access to corporate services (printers, files shares etc). Do you have the tools to inventory your estate and identify potential pitfalls?

Imaging strategy Consider what impact the change may have on the way you approach disc imaging.

Protect against data loss

APFS has been engineered to fit neatly into the gaps in HFS+, meaning the chance of data loss is minimal. However, we can’t in good conscience tell you to perform a cross-office upgrade without backing up your own data and ensuring end users do the same with their endpoint devices. Ideally, perform an automated backup across all the devices under your command yourself – asking end users to back up manually rarely gets the desired result, and even if some users oblige you, there are roadblocks such as the photo storage limit that’s imposed on the free version of iCloud, which might prevent some users backing up all their files.

We’d recommend doing an automated backup across all the devices you manage, and keeping at least one copy internally and one copy at an external site – you might want to rent some hosted cloud storage for the switchover period, as this is a really easy way to ensure you have secure, offsite backup without massively impacting your budget.

If you don’t have an automated backup solution already in place, take a look at Archiware P5, or Acronis Backup Advanced. Know what you’ll need to standardise, and check access to services

Macs running anything earlier than OS X Yosemite won’t be able to read APFS volumes. Any Macs that you buy after the next macOS release will arrive with APFS as their native file system. To avoid problems, you need to inventory your devices and work out which bits of your estate are running OS X Yosemite or earlier and then, where possible, update them so that they’re running the latest OS (here are the minimum requirements for upgrading to Sierra). You’ll also need to root out any devices which are not 64-bit.

You can share APFS volumes over SMB or NFS, but not using AFP, which has led to widespread speculation that Apple will be phasing this out soon. If you’re currently making use of AFP to give your Mac users access to print servers and the like, the move to a later OS should also help you move them over to SMB, which is far better supported in more recent OS releases.

So how do you manage this auditing process and switchover? Well, the number of dedicated Mac management solutions is on the rise, and many of them offer auditing and inventory tools that you can use to roadmap which parts of your estate need changing and when. We recommend Jamf Pro in most instances (we’re so keen on this one we can offer it as a managed, hosted service if you’d rather not take on MDM in house), but AirWatch is another popular solution that’ll serve you well if you’re in a mixed Android/iOS environment.

Changes to standard imaging practices

APFS is likely to have an impact on some of the traditional forms of disk imaging used in the deployment of new devices. Your current process might involve building a Mac with the desired OS, software and configuration settings, then creating a disk image that contains the content of that Mac’s boot drive, and then applying this to multiple other Macs.

However, Apple seem to want you to invest in MDM (we can’t argue with this) and then use DEP to facilitate zero touch device enrolment as an alternative to imaging.

Media Composer v8.8 is here and ready for download! Head to the Download Centre in your Avid account to get the update now, or keep reading to see what’s been updated.

New features

Version 8.8 has seen a raft of tweaks and new features to make your editing workflow even smoother. Here are the highlights – a more detailed breakdown is available in the Avid documentation:

– Timeline Clip Notes You can add notes to clips in the Timeline and view all the notes in the Timeline Clip Notes Window. (Used to be Adding Comments.)

– Frame Cache for Effects Editing enabling frame cache when performing colour correction.

– ScriptSync ScriptSync uses phonetic-indexing technology to analyse the audio portion of a clip and match it to lines of the script text.

– Bin sharing on non-Avid storage The editing application will notify you if your third party storage is emulating Avid NEXIS or Avid ISIS storage.

– Change to Find Window A few changes have been made to the Find Window.

– Change to the Script Window A few changes have been made to the Script Window.

Bug fixes

As well as new features, v8.8 also brings with it a range of welcome bug fixes, including:

– Not being able to open a project if the project was named Clip.

– Not being able to successfully drag and drop audio clips above or below the TC track.

–  Custom Colours not staying in the colour palette when using clip colour.

–  Disabling the ‘Auto-create new tracks’ setting was ignored when using Edit While Capture clips.

–  The Cutlist EndHdl timecode was short one frame.

–  (List Tool) The marker values were empty in an Optical List.

–  (List Tool) Markers did not display on Opticals in an Assemble List.

–  When performing an Export to Device with an XDCAM device attached, you might have received a ‘Please connect XDCAM device or insert disk’ message.

–  In some instances, exporting a graphic from linked XAVC Long GOP media failed with an assertion error.

–  In some instances, rendering a sequence with muted clips resulted in clips being partially rendered.

–  The Project Window summary might have been empty on a Mac system, or contained garbled text on a Windows system.

–  When importing some .wav files, the name of the files include a / which is an illegal character that is not supported in Interplay. This is because Media Composer uses the values of Scene/Take for the file name when importing Broadcast Wave files. An additional Import Setting has been added to the Import Settings dialogue. The ‘Use Broadcast Wave Scene and Take for Clip Names’ is defaulted on. If you are importing Broadcast Wave files and you do not want them named using Scene/Take, you must deselect this option in the Import Settings:Audio dialogue box.
Limitations:  There are 5 limitations and workarounds outlined in the ReadMe for Media Composer v8.8.
New Nvidia Driver: Nvidia Driver v375.86 is supported with this release.

Availability

Media Composer v8.8 is available now. If you have already installed the latest version of Media Composer, you will be notified of the availability of the v8.8 upgrade via the Application Manager v17.2. The Apps tab will also provide a link to download and install the update.

If you bought Media Composer on or after 16th February, 2017 you will receive this v8.8 update in your Avid Master Account.

If you are on a current Upgrade & Support plan you can download the Media Composer v8.8 update either from your Avid Master Account or the Avid Download Centre (login and password required). However, if you are not on a current Upgrade & Support contract, you must purchase either a new Media Composer Subscription or Perpetual licence to receive this update.

Our designers test drive Photoshop CC’s Touch Bar integration

When Apple launched the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and Touch ID, Adobe were one of the first software vendors to announce support for the new Touch Bar technology, demoing Photoshop integration live onstage at the launch event

Now that we have both the 13″ and 15″ models in stock, and Adobe have released a list of all the shortcuts that will be available on Touch Bar, we thought we’d set our designers loose on a Touch Bar MacBook Pro and see how they found using the new shortcuts.

To begin with it does feel a bit strange forcing yourself to use the Touch Bar rather than keyboard shortcuts, but I imagine it’s like when you first start using a Wacom Cintiq – once you get used to using it, it’s really useful.

The shortcuts I used most were definitely the ones to change layer properties. The brush options are a lot more intuitive on Touch Bar, as they increase and decrease in much smaller increments than they do when you use the keyboard shortcuts, so there’s a nice gradual slide that allows you to get exactly the size you want. The bar is very good at sliding, generally; each slider expands when you click on it, so if you’re changing colour options you have a nice wide range to get the exact hue and brightness you need, and you have a lot more room to edit the opacity options than you do when you edit them directly on your Wacom.

The favourites bar has a nice range of common shortcuts that you can add to your Touch Bar. Having full screen mode just a tap away is useful if your art director is hovering over you and wants a clean preview of your work. From a non-design point of view, I really liked having tiny previews of all my open tabs in Safari, which made searching for images far easier.

I hadn’t used one of the new generation of keyboards before and the lack of key travel feels weird at first, but the larger key area certainly makes the keyboard easier to type on. The one complaint that I would have is that the keys are perhaps a bit too noisy for the amount of travel they have.  The light touch makes me a feel like a hacker, the loud noise makes it sound like I’m mashing buttons on Street Fighter.

Touch Bar looks nice; it’s vibrant and sharp, and the matte finish allows fingers to just slide over the surface, which is nice when there are a few apps that have tabs or slides that require you to interface this way.

In Photoshop, Touch Bar initially feels a little redundant, as keyboard shortcuts can be used for a lot of the same tasks, and don’t require me to move my hands from the keyboard or move my eyes away from the screen. As time goes on though, it does have its advantages. For example, controls for brush size and opacity are easily within reach. I could imagine using a Wacom with my hand hovering over the Touch Bar, drawing with my right hand and dynamically updating the size, flow etc along the way.

There are some features that are nice with Touch Bar too. In Photoshop again, having the blending modes and layer transparency readily available is nice. I haven’t learned the keyboard shortcuts for blending modes yet, so this feels pleasant. It’s easy to see that Touch Bar would be a hit with those who aren’t privy to the dark magic of keyboard shortcuts and those used to touch screens as a primary interface.

One nice touch I did like was dialogue boxes, and that their options are readily available on the touch bar. I don’t have to move my mouse to get to the buttons to quickly dismiss pop-ups.

I can see Touch Bar being really useful for designers who don’t use a pen tablet as part of their normal workflow. The quick button options mean the left hand can be used to adjust Touch Bar controls while you use the touchpad with your right (or vice versa for lefties).

The options that are usually stuck in Menu Options are the most useful to me. Having options like horizontal/vertical flip and new layer on the bar is a huge time saver as they’re now in easy reach and don’t require me to temporarily break my train of thought to navigate menu options. Hopefully as time goes on, the customisable options available on the bar will expand, and then it’ll be a great tool for tweaking your workspace to suit your preferences.

Avid reactivate ScriptSync and PhraseFind add-on options

Hot on the heels of their acquisition of Nexidia’s Emmy award-winning dialogue and audio analysis tools, Avid have revealed that they’re bringing back ScriptSync and PhraseFind add-on options to Media Composer. 

What’s new in ScriptSync?

ScriptSync version 2.0 will be available from February 2017, either as a new add-on to your Media Composer licence, or as an update for anyone who already owns a ScriptSync version 1.0 licence.

As with the previous version, ScriptSync version 2.0 indexes your media and links your clips to your imported script text, so you can select a line of script and instantly see the associated takes.

However, with the incorporation of Nexidia technology, version 2.0 will also include: 

– An updated colour palette for richer markup.

– Native support for more frame formats, including 4×3 and 16×9.

– Undo and Redo stacks.

– User notes.

– Editable script text.

What’s new in PhraseFind?

Also available in February 2017, PhraseFind version 2.0 indexes your audio files, so you can search for media based on spoken words. Anyone with a still-active PhraseFind 1.0 licence can upgrade to PhraseFind 2.0, or it’s available as a full upgrade for anyone without a current licence.

New features in PhraseFind version 2.0 include: 

– A reskinned Find window which matches the updated one  in Media Composer.

– Autofill in the Search field.

– An improved, faster phonetic indexing engine.

– Support for additional languages and dialects.

– Support for shorter phoneme phrases (basically it listens better and returns more accurate results).

What are my licensing options?

There is no subscription option for these add-ons – they must be purchased outright. However, they are both available as a Floating Licence, in the same way that your Symphony and NewsCutter options are.

Education customers can purchase a discounted bundle that includes both add-ons – they are not available at discounted prices individually.

These latest versions will only work with Media Composer v8.8.

What’s new in Avid NEXIS v7.1?

Avid have been feeling particularly generous toward NEXIS users of late, bringing out not one but two software updates for their shared storage platform. Here’s a quick rundown of the new features. 

What’s new in Avid NEXIS v7.0?

Protected Workspaces. This release introduces support for protecting Workspaces against the failure of an entire Engine. To use this feature, called media mirroring, your shared storage system must comprise a System Director Appliance and at least three Engines of the same type (three Avid NEXIS | E2, three Avid NEXIS | E4, or three Avid NEXIS | E5 Engines). All the Engines must have the same number and capacity of Media Packs, and all of the Media Packs must belong to the same Storage Group.

For mirrored Workspaces, if an Engine fails there is no impact on workflow. 
You can upgrade an existing shared storage system to support mirrored Workspaces. After the upgrade, a new column called Mirror Capable is displayed on the Storage Groups page. If any existing Storage Groups meet the criteria for this feature, after the upgrade the Mirror Capable column displays a Yes. You do not need to manually enable this support on a Storage Group; it is automatic.
You can choose to use mirroring on new Workspaces you create in that group. Two-disk Media Pack protection is also applied to any new mirrored Workspaces.

Mirror-capable Storage Groups are subject to some restrictions on changes and redistribution; see the Avid NEXIS Administration Guide for more information.

Link aggregation. This release introduces support for link aggregation (also called NIC teaming) on the Ethernet ports in all Controllers in an Avid NEXIS Enterprise Engine or System Director Appliance. Link aggregation provides protection from a single point of failure (one Ethernet port or one switch, depending on how you configure your network).
For more detail, see the Avid NEXIS Setup and Maintenance Guide, the Avid NEXIS Administration Guide, and the Avid NEXIS Network and Switch Guide. All of these documents are available on the Avid Knowledge Base.

Bug fixes. This update fixes several issues, including:

– Drives being marked as under-performing or failed in error. This could lead to media being offline. Avid strongly recommends upgrading to Avid NEXIS v7.0.

– An issue where using copy and paste actions in the Agent did not work on the CONFIGURE tab, in the Data Interfaces fields.

– Removed the “Missing/Empty Disk” warnings in Engines that are not fully populated with Media Packs, because that is a supported configuration.

– An issue with LDAP authentication on Avid NEXIS systems, so that it no longer requires reverse DNS lookup.

– Restored the functionality of the Notification Service. In earlier versions of Avid NEXIS v6.x, the Notification Service did not work. This issue also affected Avid ISIS | 1000 systems running v5.x, on which the Notification Service was configured and working, which were upgraded to v6.x. After the upgrade, notification emails were no longer generated.

Aspera support. v7.0 introduces support for running an Aspera data transfer application on an Avid NEXIS client to transfer files between Workspaces on local and remote NEXIS systems. This release also supports transferring data from Avid NEXIS Workspaces to an Aspera Enterprise Server running Aspera on Demand for Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). What’s new in Avid NEXIS v7.1?

Increased capacity. Starting in the v7.x releases, the total scale of the Avid NEXIS Enterprise has been raised to 2.88PB of capacity and 192 GBps of bandwidth.

More Media Packs. The limits on the number of Media Packs in an Avid NEXIS system have increased, too. You can now have: up to 24 Media Packs in systems with a System Director Appliance and the Avid NEXIS | FS Extended licence and any combination of Avid NEXIS Enterprise Engines, or up to 48 Media Packs in systems with a System Director Appliance and the Avid NEXIS | FS Advanced licence and any combination of Avid NEXIS Enterprise Engines.

More secure passwords. This release introduces support for extended password lengths for users. Now, users can have passwords of up to 127 bytes, which is equivalent to 127 ASCII characters. The Administrator account for an Avid NEXIS system can also be up to 127 bytes (ASCII characters).

Better drive performance. This release fixes a problem where drives were marked as under-performing or failed in error. This could lead to media being offline. Avid requires upgrading to Avid NEXIS v7.0 or higher.

Bug fixes This release fixes a problem specific to the Avid NEXIS | PRO running Avid NEXIS v7.0, where running the Log Aggregator caused the System Director to restart. It also fixes a problem isolated to Avid NEXIS v7.0 systems, where a client could not open a Pro Tools project stored on an Avid NEXIS system.

NEXIS v7.1 is available now through your Avid Master Account.

Media Composer 8.5 is available for download now!

Avid have just announced that Media Composer 8.5 is now available via the Avid Download Centre for users with a valid Upgrade & Support plan (look for a notification in your copy’s Application Manager) or via your Master Avid Account if you’re a new customer. 

The update promises a range of exciting new features designed to speed up your editing workflow but, as ever, we beg you to back up your work before hitting download. Do it now, in fact. We’ll wait.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll be happy to hear that new features include:

Simpler menus The menus have been reorganised to remove legacy items and simplify your user experience.

An updated Timeline UI A number of updates have been made to the timeline, including enabling Sync Rollers for Sync Locked Tracks, the ability to see full segments as you drag them within the timeline, as well as the effect their repositioning will have on the rest of the timeline before you commit the change, and creating a new track by dragging a segment above or below the timeline.

Support for 64 tracks of audio Fairly self explanatory, this one.

Group by audio waveforms Group clips can be made based on audio waveform analysis.

HDR support Media Composer now includes colour spaces for High Dynamic Range (HDR). This provides support for a higher range of video signal, and enables automatic colour transformations for source files based on the HDR colour space set in the project.

Audio mixer updates You can now resize the audio mixer and create custom track groupings.

FrameFlex rotation Users can rotate the framing box in the FrameFlex source settings using the Z rotation slides, enabling the straightening or reframing of an image at the source level rather than in the timeline.

Interactive video frame cache A new Video Memory tab has been added to the Media Cache settings to allow users to save generated frames of the current playing sequence into a memory storage cache, resulting in faster response times while editing and playing back media.

UI personalisation tools Additional UI settings have been added to allow users to change the background colour of the Project Window and Timeline, and override Bin and Project fonts and font sizes.

Bin Columns updates The process for adding Custom Columns as well as Multiple Columns in bins has been simplified, and you can now copy and paste the same text to multiple fields within a column.

Identifying rendered effects Users can now choose to differentiate between rendered effect media and Title and Matte key effect media in the Media Tool. This is helpful when identifying media to delete.

SCC import Media Composer now supports importing of Scenarist Closed Caption (.scc) files.

For a complete list of fixed bugs and new features, you’ll need to familiarise yourself with the Media Composer 8.5 ReadMe, which can be found here. You’ll also want to check your Interplay documentation – this version of Media Composer is supported with Interplay 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5, so check your release notes for any known limitations on feature functionality.

Adobe launch new updates at MAX 2015

Not content with trotting out a plethora of celebrity superusers and running a ridiculous number of workshops, Adobe have announced a raft of new updates at their Adobe MAX creativity conference in LA. The new updates affect both mobile apps (which should be updatable now) and desktop ones (which will receive the update soon). 

Adding Touch workspaces to desktop apps

Not content with bringing new apps to your phone, Adobe are adding Touch workspaces to their most popular desktop apps, so that you can work using gesture controls on devices such as Windows touch surfaces.

Adobe promise that InDesign users will be able to create layouts, while video editors will be able to scrub clips, drag and drop items on their timelines, and navigate through panels in a group, all without the need for anything as vulgar as a mouse.

Graphic designers’ holy trinity picks up updates (including a new app)

If you tend to stick with Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, you’ll be pleased to know they’ve not been neglected, either:

– The next update to Photoshop CC will be tightly integrated with the brand new Adobe Fuse CC (Preview). Fuse lets you create realistic 3D models, easily insert the 3D model into a scene in Photoshop CC with the power of CreativeSync, apply poses and animations, and adjust camera angles and lighting. Fuse is also a fast and flexible new way to create stunning 2D image compositions with 3D-like depth.

– The new Shaper tool in Illustrator CC gives you the functionality of 12 different tools and panels in a single tool. Draw basic shapes like circles, squares, and polygons, and the Shaper tool quickly and intuitive creates perfect geometric shapes for you. Plus, these will be Live Shapes so they are nondestructive and easily editable.

– InDesign CC will update Publish Online, allowing you to embed a document directly in a website.

There’s also been a particular focus on photo editing, with Adobe adding the ability to apply Dehaze more precisely to Lightroom CC, so you can control in the image exactly where you want to decrease or increase atmospheric haze.

The new Import tool automatically identifies photos from your camera card, hard drive, Photoshop Elements, Aperture and other sources, and easily imports them into Lightroom. Plus with this release of Lightroom Mobile you can take photos and apply Dehaze and other Photoshop magic as you capture the moment. Photoshop CC has several Adobe Camera Raw updates, including the addition of Dehaze as a local adjustment. They’ve also updated the way Zoom works so it is now easier and more intuitive to move around your image when zoomed in.

Updates for UX and web designers

More flexibility in Muse, 64-bit architecture in Dreamweaver and the vaguely defined but excitingly-named Project Comet lead the updates to Adobe’s web-focused apps…

– Artboards improvements in Photoshop CC include guides for precise placement of elements, easier visualization of layers and the ability to customise the look and feel of your documents. The Photoshop CC release will also deliver the first version of Design Space, a modern design experience, inside Photoshop CC, streamlined for the requirements of web, UX and mobile app designers.

– Project Comet is a brand new Creative Cloud app currently under development, aimed at designing and prototyping web and mobile user experiences. We welcome you to be a part of the development process – sign up for the technology preview now.

– Web designers will love the new 64-bit version of Dreamweaver CC. We’ve added responsive design capabilities using new visual aids and the latest Bootstrap framework.

– Muse CC adds free-form responsive design to easily create custom websites that dynamically scale to any size screen, browser or device, without having to code or use restrictive templates.

– Flash Pro CC has been adding support for HTML5 and today we announced the ability to publish animations to multiple platforms including HTML5 Canvas, WebGL or even custom platforms – and with this release we are adding support for 4K video formats.

New video features fly in from IBC

After a successful launch at IBC 2015 in Amsterdam, Adobe brought out their latest video tools for their first American airing. Updates include…

– Premiere Pro CC ushers in the new era of UltraHD via comprehensive native format support for editing beautiful 4K-to-8k footage, and advances colour, with support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) workflows in Premiere Pro CC.

– After Effects CC now has the powerful and accessible colour tools and colour workspace that Premiere Pro has.

– Audition CC introduces Remix, a new audio feature that automatically rearranges music to any duration while maintaining the aural integrity and structure of the piece.

Pooling in Adobe Stock and the introduction of Adobe Portfolio

Adobe are also deepening Adobe Stock integration with CC desktop apps so you can easily search for and browse assets directly from Creative Cloud Libraries. For customers who have an Adobe Stock subscription, stock content can also be directly licensed from within the CC apps for use in projects, saving time and effort. They also plan to add video to Adobe Stock, which can be used for corporate videos or commercial use in advertising, television shows, websites, and more. Additionally, Adobe Stock has new features just for businesses, offering pooled licences at no extra cost to Creative Cloud for teams customers, as well as Extended Licences for usage of stock content in large print runs.

Finally, the team introduced Adobe Portfolio, a new service that lets you create a fully customised, responsive portfolio of work on your own domain – without having to write a line of code. Available soon, Portfolio will be included as part of all Adobe Creative Cloud plans. Portfolio is built on Behance, which means you can sync your Adobe Portfolio to your Behance Projects pages with a click, giving you even more opportunities to get your work discovered in the world’s largest creative social network.

Introducing new mobile apps: Photoshop Fix and Adobe Capture CC

Photoshop Fix lets you retouch and restore images right on your phone or tablet. Popular Photoshop desktop app features, like the Healing Brush and Liquify, are easy to use with the touch interface, so you can now do real retouching work right on your iPad and iPhone.

Adobe Capture CC makes it even easier for you to use your mobile devices to capture what inspires you and quickly create a brush, shape, or colour theme for professional work. The new Adobe Capture CC brings Adobe Brush, Adobe Shape, Adobe Color and Adobe Hue into a single, powerful, simple-to-use app.

There have also been tweaks to a number of existing apps, including Mix, Stretch, Draw, Comp and Clip, so there should be something useful for you whatever discipline you’re working in.

Blackmagic Design reveal the first post-eyeon Fusion

Blackmagic Design have announced the launch of the new version of Fusion, the first since it bought the software from original makers eyeon. Here’s the lowdown…

There’ll be two versions – Fusion and Fusion Studio

Fusion is essentially a free ‘lite’ version of the program, with no plug-ins, 3D tools or network capabilities. But also no price tag, which means we’re sure it’ll find its market. Fusion Studio will be a larger, fully featured version that requires a dongle (separate to your Resolve one) for access and costs £635.

Fusion Studio includes Generation

eyeon’s workflow/asset management tool, Generation, will be included in the Studio version of Blackmagic’s Fusion, but is no longer available separately.

Existing dongles won’t work for the Blackmagic version of Fusion

That means most current users on 6.4 or 7 or network licences will need a new dongle. However, if you pick up a Windows dongle now, Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty promises it will work with Mac OS X once Fusion is released for Mac. He told the company’s official forum:

“One thing I can say though, is that our plan is to allow anyone who purchases the Windows version of Fusion 7 Studio to use their dongle on the Mac and to be able to download that Mac OS X version of Fusion free of charge. That’s what we do with DaVinci Resolve and it’s very flexible and I think helps people a lot. So we want to do that with Fusion also, even though they are very different types of software.”

No site licences or network licences (as per Resolve)

Before you panic, active subscription users will all get the upgrade and the new dongle – Blackmagic are currently collecting user info and will contact you directly to help you transition. After that, though, your subs are EOL.
