IBC 2017: Panasonic showcase first footage from the EVA1

Panasonic introduced the EVA1 at Cine Expo, and we’ve been waiting to get our hands on it ever since. Those of you lucky enough to be in Amsterdam can see it on their stand at IBC, but we can all enjoy the first test footage, released today.

Shot in Iceland by DoP Filippo Chiesa and graded by Frederic Savoir, the clip highlights some of the great features the EVA1 has inherited from Panasonic’s Varicam range.

Like the Varicam LT, the AU-EVA1 is capable of dual native ISO, a technology that allows you to extract more information from the sensor increasing the level of noise or artefacts in the film, leading to crisper images and better low light performance.

Also imported from the VariCam range is V-Log/V-Gamut capture, which gives you high dynamic range, bolder colours and more realistic skin tones – the log curves of V-Log are reminiscent of those of negative film, and V-Gamut delivers a colour space even larger than that of film.

If you want to see. more of the EVA1 in action, there’s a making of video, too. Alternatively, we hear last minute flights to Amsterdam are very reasonable.

IBC 2017: Panasonic announce new live mixer and 360 degree camera

IBC 2017: Panasonic announce new live mixer and 360 degree camera

Panasonic’s IBC offering are focused on live streaming and broadcast, with the announcement of a new “live streaming production centre”, the AV-HLC100, and a 360 degree 4K live camera. Let’s do the HLC100 first.

Panasonic AV-HLC100

av_hcl100_blog_sized

Panasonic have designed the AV-HLC100 for environments where there are very few operators. It combines an ME switcher, a PTZ camera controller and an audio mixer into a single unit, so you can have one person handling everything from shooting to transmission – ideal for conferences, sports events and live streaming setups. It’ll even record a copy of your stream at the same time as transmitting it.

The HLC100 supports up to eight cameras, and allows you to mix embedded, line-input and mic-input audio with your video streams. It can accept four SDI inputs (or three SDI and one HDMI) and eight network ones, and is compatible with NewTek’s NDI technology to support IP workflows. It also supports RTMP, for direct transmission to popular live platforms like YouTube Live.

AW-360C10 and AW-360B10

Screen Shot 2017-09-27 at 11.31.32

The C is for camera and the B is for base unit, just to clear up any confusion on that score. The four synchronised Cs record uncompressed 4K (3840 x 1920) in a 2:1 equirectangular format, with built-in white balance and exposer tools ensuring consistency across the four images, and an active stitching tool that constantly shifts the stitch site so that the subject of your shot never gets lost in the fold.

These cameras generate 4K/30p video at low latency to enable live transmission (Panasonic have included a few other physical features to help live transmission too, such as lockable HDMI covers to stop one camera being unexpectedly removed mid-broadcast). You can control your cameras from a PC over a network connection, or from an iPad over a WiFi connection.

Availability

We’re still waiting on an official drop date, but Panasonic promise both the AV-HLC100 and AW-360C10 will both arrive this quarter.

Get HDR ready with the latest from Atomos, Sony, Blackmagic Design and more!

Get HDR ready with the latest from Atomos, Sony, Blackmagic Design and more!

HDR has taken the industry by storm, and makes such a difference to the quality of your images that soon we’ll be wondering how we got by without it. To get the latest tips on getting the most out of your HDR-capable technology, we brought in the experts and laid out the kit for our drop-in session on utilising your Atomos monitor and recorder to create HDR content.

Why is HDR so important?

HDR is arguably the biggest step forward for moving pictures in a generation. New standards set in REC.2100 take advantage of the luminance and colour reproduction capabilities of modern displays to produce high levels of brightness, contrast and colour volume, leading to images that closely resemble what our eyes naturally see.

Content producers have long been working with high dynamic range source material through Log and RAW captured images. But output and delivery standards haven’t progressed much for decades, meaning we’ve spent years compromising. HDR is a new way forward as it is a resolution independent technology, with the new standards outlined in REC.2100 being applicable to both 1080p (HD), UltraHD and 4K – even 8K come 2020.

Unlike previous technological progression that required significant hardware overhauls, HDR doesn’t require lots of new hardware. The most significant piece of new kit is the display we monitor HDR material on, and how we process the signal to see the images we are creating appropriately. This is where Atomos, one of the fastest growing companies in pro video, are pushing the envelope in the field, on set and in the studio.

Our HDR portfolio

Up your game with Atomos recorders and monitors

We featured a great range of HDR-capable products, and much more at our recent Production Drop in event. We were excited to demo the Sumo On-Set and Studio monitor/recorder, the first production monitor that also records 4K 12-bit Raw, 10-bit ProRes/DNxHR and 1080p60 live switching and recording. With the Sumo, for the first time your on-set production monitors can be HDR capable as well as having recording capabilities.

We also had the Atomos Shogun Inferno monitor/recorder on show, a combination of the most advanced monitor technologies, the latest recording capability, and playback and editing functionality that encourages on set collaboration. Rounding off our Atomos offering was the Ninja Flame monitor/recorder, with its true-to-life vibrant colors, 7″ 10-bit 1500nit panel, AtomHDR engine and HDMI connections to record and play back video to 4K/HD 10-bit ProRes/DNxHR.

Get HDR ready with our favourite camcorders

Camera-wise, we had some of the newest models to be announced, plus some of our old favourites. The new Canon Cinema EOS C200 camcorder is the latest in the EOS range, big brother to the very popular C100 MK II and following in the footsteps of the C300 MK II. With this camcorder, you can easily capture and record UHD/50P footage to internal SD cards in MP4 format, and use the new Cinema RAW Light codec to film moments in stunning 4K to internal CFast 2.0TM card.

We also showcased the Sony FS5 and FS7 camcorders, both firm favourites with Jigsaw24. The FS7 is a must-have run and gun camera equipped with a Super 35mm CMOS image sensor, while the FS5 is an amazing small form factor, large sensor 4K camera that’s great in terms of weight, balance and ergonomics.

Also on show was the long-awaited Panasonic Lumix GH5, which gives you the highest picture quality in the history of Lumix G compact systems cameras. With its compact design, high frame rate and intuitive controls, the GH5 has been described as a great fit for creative agencies, photographers and videographers. And let’s not forget the Blackmagic Design Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K, a professional digital film camera that combines the incredible image quality of URSA Mini 4.6K with the features and controls of a traditional broadcast camera.

Panasonic introduce AU-EVA1 at Cine Gear Expo

Panasonic introduce AU-EVA1 at Cine Gear Expo

Panasonic have surprised us with a brand new camera at this year’s Cine Gear Expo. Called the AU-EVA1, it’s a 5.7K EF mount cinema camera that weighs just 1.2kg and shoots to low cost SD cards.

AU-EVA1_Slant

Positioned between the GH5 and the VariCam LT 4K, the AU-EVA1 is designed for handheld shooting of documentaries, music videos, adverts and the like. The camera’s small size and light weight mean it’s also good for gimbal and rig mounted shooting.

The AU-EVA1 has a 5.7K Super 35mm size sensor, delivering an image that can be sampled down to 4K, UHD, 2K or even 720p. The camera is capable of shooting 10-bit 422, with RAW output to be added in a future update. The AU-EVA1 can shoot 4K 60p and 2K at up to 240p.

AU-EVA1_Side

Port-wise, you get 4K HDMI and SDI outputs, plus two balanced XLR audio inputs so you can get professional quality audio.

Prices are yet to be completely confirmed, but Panasonic have promised us a body only camera this autumn for under €8000.

Looking for something similar?

This camera is on the same level as Sony’s FS5 and FS7, and comparable to the also-recently-released Canon C200, (a whole 200g heavier and with Cinema RAW Light support already built in; shoots Full HD at up to 120 fps HFR).

The EVA1 is expected to ship in October, but you can pre-order yours here. If you want to know more, give us a call on 03332 409 306 or email broadcast@Jigsaw24.com. For all the latest news, follow @WeAreJigsaw24 on Twitter, or ‘Like’ us on Facebook.

NAB 2017: Panasonic showcases next gen technology and solutions to support 4K smart entertainment and connected stadiums

Panasonic have revealed that their NAB highlights this year will include the 4K AK-UC3000 studio camera system and the HD AK-HC5000 high-speed camera system, 4-sided LED videoboards, ballooncam, and augmented reality projection.

Panasonic Corporation showcases its leading video solutions supporting 4K content creation such as broadcast / video production, stadium business and stadium entertainment at the 2017 NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 24 – 27.

“One of the big themes of NAB 2017 is the confluence of Media and Entertainment Technologies,” said Masaki Arizono, Executive Officer of Panasonic Corporation, and Vice President of Connected Solutions Company in charge of Media Entertainment Business. “This is exactly the business direction Panasonic is now aiming to pursue. It is our mission to become a truly indispensable technology partner for customers in this industry with diverse solutions, making full use of Internet connectivity and other technologies from across our portfolio.”

The Panasonic booth (C3607) at the Las Vegas Convention Center has two zones – Connected Stadium Zone and Production Zone. It is designed as a sports stadium to demonstrate how a total solution contributes to guests’ experience. Booth technologies and solutions range from next-gen sports shooting systems to the latest display devices used to engage spectators, including large LED display systems, digital signage, and other equipment for shooting, editing, transmission and distribution.

For broadcast / production, Panasonic is showcasing technologies that respond to the needs of the 4K era, such as:

– AK-UC3000 4K Studio Camera System compatible with UHD (4K) output and HD/SD simultaneous output.

– AK-HC5000 HD Studio Camera System capable of 1080p 4× high-speed shooting.

For video production, Panasonic is demonstrating product lineups that respond to evolving to high-quality content:

– VariCam 35 4K Cinema Camera/Recorder, which has already built a reputation for its HDR color reproduction, low light capability and wide dynamic range.

– VariCam LT 4K Cinema Camcorder.

– VariCamPure 4K Camera Module for V-RAW 2.0 Recorder: the camera module of the VariCam 35 directly linked to the V-RAW2.0 recorder capable of uncompressed 4K RAW acquisition.

Other 4K cameras on display:

In the Connected Stadium Zone, Panasonic displays technologies and solutions that take the stadium experience to a new level of engagement:

– ballooncam combines a drone with the hovering capability of a large balloon for a unique video platform. With unique shooting angles, the ballooncam can be used to enhance the fan experience at sporting and other stadium events.

– Gigantic four-sided LED screens, hung in the center of the field, offers premium viewing from all stadium seats.

– Window Augmented Reality Projection. See how transparent film applied to ordinary window glass can serve as signage to display pristine images. At stadiums, Window Augmented Reality Projection can be used to enhance the experience by showing player stats and high-impact video.

– LinkRay-equipped LCD Displays. These displays support Panasonic’s LinkRay light ID communication technology. Users can download info instantaneously by pointing their mobile devices at the screens.

Cisco suggest that video will account for 69% of all consumer internet traffic by 2017, meaning the time is now to get involved in video content creation. We think these fine pieces of production tech are a great starting point for anyone looking to step it up in the studio.

First off, we’d suggest giving some studio basics from Blackmagic Design a look. With the Hyperdeck Studio 12G Professional VTR (an advanced, high-quality broadcast deck), the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K (adding 4K to your workflow) and a Blackmagic Audio Monitor (featuring a dual subwoofer design with extra wide speakers), your studio will be off to a strong start.

If you’re making video, you’ll need a camera. Fortunately, we’ve got an awesome 0% finance offer running on the JVC GY-HM890CHE. This compact shoulder camcorder is perfect for filming in the studio or out in the field. It can even live stream content wirelessly via WiFi or 4G-LTE/3G.

Keeping it in the JVC family, we’re giving away a free training day worth £300 with every purchase of a GY-HM170E. Take this compact 4K camera anywhere and grab the footage you need without being lumbered down by a larger unit.

Finally, we’ve got a Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm lens to give away when you pick up a JVC GY-LS300 from us. Get recording in a variety of formats ranging from web friendly proxies and SD to full HD and Ultra HD 4K. It’ll work perfectly with photographic lenses you already own, so make sure to grab this bargain offer while it lasts.
