IBC 2017: Avid add SSD support to NEXIS storage

IBC 2017: Avid add SSD support to NEXIS storage

Avid’s NEXIS software is ‘software-defined’, meaning you can manage the storage system independently from its underlying hardware – something you’ll get to do very soon, as Avid have released another update.

Avid NEXIS | FS software version 7.7 was released just last month (if that’s not ringing a bell, it’s the one that introduced support for single-disk mirrored workspace protection, so you get more storage capacity and better protection in one swoop).

Avid-NEXIS-Admin

But Avid don’t like to rest on their laurels, and have released another update at IBC. As the Avid blog explains, “To accommodate high resolution (4K/UHD and above) finishing, we’ve added the option of SSD drives to the Avid NEXIS | E2 engines. Available as either 9.6 TB or 19.2 TB Media Packs, you can edit bandwidth-intensive media in realtime with up to eight times greater read performance over hard disk drives. There are no moving parts, so it adds greater robustness to your workflow. And since Avid NEXIS is a scalable storage platform, this is a simple, additive process.

“All Avid NEXIS | Enterprise storage engines are fully compatible with one another. They can be mixed, matched and augmented, so a storage investment in Avid NEXIS never becomes obsolete as capacity, bandwidth performance and availability can be upgraded to meet changing content and production demands.

“As Avid is committed to improving collaboration across the broadest range of media workflows, we extensively test not just our own creative software tools like Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools, but also those from third parties, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro and Grass Valley EDIUS.

“At IBC 2017, we’re excited to announce MediaCentral for Post – a solution comprising Avid NEXIS, Media Composer and a component of the all-new MediaCentral ecosystem, MediaCentral | Editorial Management, a robust, yet lightweight file management application. It’s a snap to install and configure, so you’ll be up and running in no time. Its MediaCentral Core indexing engine and service keep track of all projects and media stored, so everyone on the team can view what’s available in realtime. For post production in particular, we truly believe that this will be a real game changer in terms of collaborative content creation, whatever resolution you are working in.

“With over 1500 installations in just a year since its first release, Avid NEXIS is being adopted quickly by media producers all around the world — from pre-eminent global broadcasters to boutique post houses, and everything in between. Avid NEXIS is proven and trusted in the most demanding and bandwidth-intensive workflows. It continues to lead the market as reliable, high-performance, intelligent storage for media that can scale and adjust quickly to change, without interrupting production. At IBC 2017, we’re taking productivity to new levels, not just by tweaking the tech, but also by turbocharging the capacity for teamwork.”

What’s new in NEXIS?

What’s new in NEXIS?

Avid have continued their trend of releasing clusters of updates for their NEXIS shared storage system, with recent additions taking us from NEXIS 7.1 to 7.4. Here’s what you’ll be able to enjoy once you’ve updated…

Avid NEXIS 7.1.1

The Avid NEXIS 7.1.1 patch releasencludes an important fix for Avid NEXIS systems with clients that inadvertently attempt to connect through a 100Mbps Ethernet connection. Anything other than 1Gb or 10Gb is not a supported connection speed, and the client would fail to connect. However, beginning with v5.0, the client’s attempt to connect at an unsupported speed caused the Storage Manager to assert and the Avid NEXIS system to become temporarily unresponsive. This fix prevents the system from asserting, and rejects the unsupported client connection. Those clients must modify their connection speeds to connect to Avid NEXIS.

Avid NEXIS 7.2

The Avid NEXIS v7.2 release includes support for adding Media Packs to a mirror-capable Storage Group during a maintenance window (no client I/O to Workspaces in that Storage Group). However, there are a few parameters: the Media Packs must be the same capacity as those already in the mirror- capable Storage Group, and each Engine you are adding to the mirror-capable Storage Group must have the same number of Media Packs as the Engines already in it.

For example, if a mirror-capable Storage Group contains three Avid NEXIS | E4 Engines each with two 60TB Media Packs, you can add another Avid NEXIS | E4 Engine with two 60TB Media Packs to the same mirror-capable Storage Group.

The update also adds: support for macOS Sierra (v10.12.2) clients; support for Avid NEXIS File Gateway software on an AS3000 Server, and open access to Avid NEXIS workspaces using the Avid NEXIS | File Gateway installed on that Avid AS3000 Server running Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. This allows access to Avid NEXIS from clients and infrastructures that do not have the Avid NEXIS Client installed.

The Avid NEXIS File Gateway server and software are available now and documentation is available on the Avid Knowledge Base. When interface checking in relation to redundant controller configurations, the default gateway IP address must be reachable by a ping command, otherwise the interface is disabled. This can cause the Avid NEXIS Engine or System Director Appliance to become disconnected from the network. Before upgrading to Avid NEXIS v7.2, make sure there is a default gateway IP address configured, and that it can be reached by a ping command. For more information, see the Avid Knowledge Base.

Avid NEXIS 7.3

With the arrival of NEXIS 7.3, the Avid NEXIS Client Kit is now available to download from the Avid Download Centre. Avid ISIS and Avid NEXIS customers can download and install the latest Avid NEXIS Client software, which connects to both Avid NEXIS and Avid ISIS (v4.7.5 and higher) systems.

Avid have fixed an issue introduced in Avid NEXIS v7.2 where the System Director was using the ping command to determine the presence and connectivity of the default gateway IP address, and counting on a valid address being configured. The ping command is no longer used to determine the presence or validity of a default gateway address. Avid recommends updating to Avid NEXIS v7.3 from v7.1 or earlier to avoid the possibility of losing access to the interface if no default gateway is configured, or if it is configured incorrectly.

They have also fixed an issue where the hardware status on the Agent was displaying incorrect or no information for the power supplies and fans in an Avid NEXIS | E5, an ‘Edit While Capture’ issue where constant reads of a data chunk led to a delayed write failure.

They have also added support for the following Myricom 10GbE Rev C NICs for use in Avid NEXIS clients: 10G-PCIE2-8C2-2T, 10G-PCIE2-8C-T and 10G-PCIE2-8C2-2S. The Myricom driver bundled with the Avid NEXIS kit works for these NICs.

Avid NEXIS 7.3.1

The Avid NEXIS v7.3.1 release fixes an issue in Avid NEXIS 7.2 and 7.3 where under some circumstances, including intermittent network connections, external user authentication using LDAP would fail. Update all client systems to Avid NEXIS Client v7.3.1 before updating the Avid NEXIS system to v7.3.1. The Avid NEXIS v7.3 client cannot connect to a system running Avid NEXIS v7.3.1 or higher.

Avid NEXIS 7.3.2

The Avid NEXIS v7.3.2 release fixed a timing issue where in some circumstances, an Avid Interplay Media Indexer would assert (blue screen).

Avid NEXIS 7.4

The Avid NEXIS v7.4 release adds support for CentOS Linux version 7.3 as a client operating system. Clients running CentOS and the Avid NEXIS v7.4 client software can connect to an Avid ISIS system running v4.7.5 and higher, and to any Avid NEXIS system. The CentOS client kit is available in the Installers page in the Management Console and also in the Installers_Client\ folder in the Avid NEXIS kit, and is named AvidNEXISClient_el.centos.x86_64_7.4.0_5.bin.

Avid Client software for Linux now displays and connects to more than 10 remote System Directors. Previous versions of the Linux client limited to 10 the number of remote System Director connections (and the number displayed in the Client Manager’s Systems pane). The Client Manager now displays and connects to as many remote System Directors as are configured in the Remote Hosts dialog box.

The release also fixes an edit-while-capture workflow problem involving clients using dual 1Gb connections to the Avid NEXIS.

Avid Connect 2017: Just the audio bits

Avid Pro Tools will now offer native support for Dolby Atmos mixing and expanded support for the NEXIS family, and cloud tools are on their way to Pro Tools | First.

Dolby Atmos integration

While sound mixers have been able to work on these large-scale and highly complex projects using the Dolby Atmos Panner plug-in for Pro Tools, in conjunction with the Dolby RMU hardware, the process hasn’t been as fluid as it could be. To change that, Avid has partnered with Dolby to create the deepest Dolby Atmos integration across the Pro Tools | HD ecosystem, delivering the most efficient immersive audio mixing workflows of any DAW in the industry.

The upcoming update for Pro Tools greatly streamlines multi-channel surround mixing for movies, television, music, and video games that employ the leading immersive audio format, enabling faster and easier project turnarounds. It supports Atmos 7.1.2 audio stems, native object panning, advanced automation, ADM BWAV support, and deep Avid Pro Mixing control surface integration.

You’ll now be able to work with a variety of Dolby Atmos speaker configurations for editorial and sound design, with support for 7.1.2 and 7.0.2 stem formats, as well as built-in fold-down logic. 3D object routing and panning, eliminating the need for the Dolby Atmos Panner plug-in and makes it easier to make decisions on the fly, and synchronised audio and automation punches while re-recording allow you to sial-in mixes with ultimate fluidity.

You can also monitor and route hundreds of audio inputs and outputs through Pro Tools | MTRX, which provides the bandwidth and sonic fidelity preservation required for mixing any large-scale immersive audio format, and repurpose content faster with support for ADM BWAV files, which contain embedded print master metadata.

The premium suite of Dolby Atmos mixing tools will be available in a forthcoming release of Pro Tools | HD in late Q2 2017 (although Avid advise this is subject to change).

Expanded NEXIS support

Avid Pro Tools, the industry-standard digital audio workstation, is now qualified on Avid NEXIS, enabling audio creative teams to also leverage the industry’s most efficient and powerful media storage environment. With Pro Tools combined with Avid NEXIS, users can share projects on a centralized pool of media storage, turning work around faster by eliminating the time wasted moving files between different systems.

With these updates, NEXIS users gain new collaborative audio workflows using Pro Tools in small to mid-size audio post production and small broadcast environments, so you can  increase productivity and speed up turnaround by sharing projects on Avid NEXIS, eliminating the time wasted moving files between systems.

The new Avid NEXIS features are expected to be made available in June 2017, as part of a software update to customers with active maintenance and support contracts for Avid NEXIS | FS and Avid Pro Tools. Pro Tools streaming and sharing from Avid NEXIS storage will also be available at the end of June 2017.

Avid Nexis | First

Avid is giving Pro Tools | First a major update, packing in many of the exciting new features found in the latest version of Pro Tools, so First users can always sound their best. The new features include Avid Cloud Collaboration for seamless online creative collaboration, and new music creation and editing features, including a 500 MB loop library. Users will also be able to play back and share VI and plug-in-heavy mixes more easily with Track Freeze, enabling you to freeze (render) and unfreeze all plug-ins on a track to free up processing power.

What’s new in Avid NEXIS v7.1?

What’s new in Avid NEXIS v7.1?

Avid have been feeling particularly generous toward NEXIS users of late, bringing out not one but two software updates for their shared storage platform. Here’s a quick rundown of the new features.

What’s new in Avid NEXIS v7.0?

Protected Workspaces. This release introduces support for protecting Workspaces against the failure of an entire Engine. To use this feature, called media mirroring, your shared storage system must comprise a System Director Appliance and at least three Engines of the same type (three Avid NEXIS | E2, three Avid NEXIS | E4, or three Avid NEXIS | E5 Engines). All the Engines must have the same number and capacity of Media Packs, and all of the Media Packs must belong to the same Storage Group.

For mirrored Workspaces, if an Engine fails there is no impact on workflow.
You can upgrade an existing shared storage system to support mirrored Workspaces. After the upgrade, a new column called Mirror Capable is displayed on the Storage Groups page. If any existing Storage Groups meet the criteria for this feature, after the upgrade the Mirror Capable column displays a Yes. You do not need to manually enable this support on a Storage Group; it is automatic.
You can choose to use mirroring on new Workspaces you create in that group. Two-disk Media Pack protection is also applied to any new mirrored Workspaces.

Mirror-capable Storage Groups are subject to some restrictions on changes and redistribution; see the Avid NEXIS Administration Guide for more information.

Link aggregation. This release introduces support for link aggregation (also called NIC teaming) on the Ethernet ports in all Controllers in an Avid NEXIS Enterprise Engine or System Director Appliance. Link aggregation provides protection from a single point of failure (one Ethernet port or one switch, depending on how you configure your network).
For more detail, see the Avid NEXIS Setup and Maintenance Guide, the Avid NEXIS Administration Guide, and the Avid NEXIS Network and Switch Guide. All of these documents are available on the Avid Knowledge Base.

Bug fixes. This update fixes several issues, including:

– Drives being marked as under-performing or failed in error. This could lead to media being offline. Avid strongly recommends upgrading to Avid NEXIS v7.0.

– An issue where using copy and paste actions in the Agent did not work on the CONFIGURE tab, in the Data Interfaces fields.

– Removed the “Missing/Empty Disk” warnings in Engines that are not fully populated with Media Packs, because that is a supported configuration.

– An issue with LDAP authentication on Avid NEXIS systems, so that it no longer requires reverse DNS lookup.

– Restored the functionality of the Notification Service. In earlier versions of Avid NEXIS v6.x, the Notification Service did not work. This issue also affected Avid ISIS | 1000 systems running v5.x, on which the Notification Service was configured and working, which were upgraded to v6.x. After the upgrade, notification emails were no longer generated.

Aspera support. v7.0 introduces support for running an Aspera data transfer application on an Avid NEXIS client to transfer files between Workspaces on local and remote NEXIS systems. This release also supports transferring data from Avid NEXIS Workspaces to an Aspera Enterprise Server running Aspera on Demand for Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). For more information, see here.

What’s new in Avid NEXIS v7.1?

Increased capacity. Starting in the v7.x releases, the total scale of the Avid NEXIS Enterprise has been raised to 2.88PB of capacity and 192 GBps of bandwidth.

More Media Packs. The limits on the number of Media Packs in an Avid NEXIS system have increased, too. You can now have: up to 24 Media Packs in systems with a System Director Appliance and the Avid NEXIS | FS Extended licence and any combination of Avid NEXIS Enterprise Engines, or up to 48 Media Packs in systems with a System Director Appliance and the Avid NEXIS | FS Advanced licence and any combination of Avid NEXIS Enterprise Engines.

More secure passwords. This release introduces support for extended password lengths for users. Now, users can have passwords of up to 127 bytes, which is equivalent to 127 ASCII characters. The Administrator account for an Avid NEXIS system can also be up to 127 bytes (ASCII characters).

Better drive performance. This release fixes a problem where drives were marked as under-performing or failed in error. This could lead to media being offline. Avid requires upgrading to Avid NEXIS v7.0 or higher.

Bug fixes This release fixes a problem specific to the Avid NEXIS | PRO running Avid NEXIS v7.0, where running the Log Aggregator caused the System Director to restart. It also fixes a problem isolated to Avid NEXIS v7.0 systems, where a client could not open a Pro Tools project stored on an Avid NEXIS system.

NEXIS v7.1 is available now through your Avid Master Account.

Moving from Avid ISIS | 1000 to NEXIS | PRO? Here’s what we know…

Moving from Avid ISIS | 1000 to NEXIS | PRO? Here’s what we know…

As you’ve probably heard, Avid have announced that they’re launching the NEXIS family of shared storage products and phasing out the ISIS range. The smaller ISIS | 1000 has be rebranded and given a software update to become the NEXIS | PRO!

For those of you who were about to buy an ISIS | 1000, have just bought an ISIS | 1000 or have based your entire storage setup around the ISIS | 1000, this might have been slightly unwelcome news, but actually the move to NEXIS seems pretty simple. Here’s what you need to know.

Are ISIS | 1000 and NEXIS | PRO hardware that different?

No. Actually they’re identical. The difference is that existing ISISes (ISIii?) run v5 ISIS control software, whereas NEXIS | PRO systems will ship with v6 NEXIS software. If you have an Avid Support subscription, you’ll get v6 NEXIS software as a free update via your Avid Master Account as soon as it’s released, effectively turning your ISIS | 1000 into a NEXIS | PRO.

But it’ll still say ISIS on.

If this really bothers you, you can order a new bezel from Avid, so that your storage has the right name on.

I’ve got an ISIS | 1000 unit in the post. Will I actually receive a NEXIS?

No. Avid are clearing their stock of ISIS | 1000, so if you have just placed an order then you’ll receive an ISIS unit and a NEXIS sticker to put on the bezel should you wish to do so. The ISIS | 1000 will run v5 ISIS software out of the box, and you can update it to NEXIS software via your Avid Master Account as soon as the update is released.

Can I connect NEXIS and ISIS | 1000 units?

According to the Avid FAQ, “You can simultaneously connect clients to both Avid ISIS and Avid NEXIS systems in your workflow using the Avid NEXIS 6.0 client software. However, ISIS storage engines cannot be physically mixed with Avid NEXIS storage engines in the same system to form one pool of storage.” NEXIS units can be added to your current ISIS VLAN.

Can I use NEXIS | PRO and NEXIS Enterprise systems together?

Similar to the above. PRO and Enterprise systems can’t be combined to create a single pool of storage.

But I can combine multiple PRO systems?

You can combine up to four PRO systems to create an 80TB pool of storage, but this pool can’t be combined with any of the larger NEXIS Enterprise systems.

Do other applications already work with NEXIS?
MediaCentral Platform applications do (that includes Media Composer, Pro Tools and Interplay), plus third party solutions including Premiere Pro, FCP X and EDIUS. NEXIS will work with Mac, Windows and Linux systems.

What protection do I get against drive failures?

Again, we’re going to hand over to Avid to field this one:

“With the release of Avid NEXIS 6.0 there are three Workspace Protection types offered:

Two Drive Protection – 2 parity blocks are written for each stripe of data – RAID 6 Fashion. This allows for two media drives to fail within a Media Pack (10 drives) before media is not recoverable.

One Drive Protection – 1 parity block is written for each stripe of data – RAID 5 Fashion. This allows for 1 media drive to fail within a Media Pack (10 drives) before media is not recoverable.

Unprotected – No parity blocks are written – RAID 0 Fashion. Any drive failure will cause data loss

IMPORTANT: A failed media drive should be replaced without shutting down the system.

Avid NEXIS is “Media Aware” – Only the actual media on the drives will be rebuild, reducing rebuild times.”

What should I do if I still have questions?

Get in touch with our Avid-accredited engineers, who can help you plan your move to NEXIS, or help you configure any new units you have one the way.

NAB 2016: Avid announce NEXIS storage at Avid Connect

AVID today have announced a number of new and updated products at their Avid Connect event, prior to the NAB show which begins on Monday. One of the major headlines is a series of new storage systems, called NEXIS, building on the same hardware and operating system used with the ISIS 1000, launched last year, which is now renamed the NEXIS | Pro.

NAB 2016 Avid Storage Announcement

Overview

– NEXIS storage comes in three system architectures – the 2U Pro model is a rebranding of the ISIS 1000, the NEXIS E2 and E4 are the new models coming in at 2U and 4U sizes.
– 400MB/s per 10 drive media pack. 2TB and 6 TB drive sizes in the E2 and E4 models.
– 2U system director available for E2 and E4 models to allow management of up to 330 active edit clients, 20 million files, and 5-24 media packs.
– E2/E4 based workgroup scaleable to 1.44PB using 24 media packs.
– The E2 (and E4) use more powerful and advanced system controllers than the Pro model which allows them to be more scaleable and provide more bandwidth.

NEXIS | Pro
Avid_NEXIS_PRO_Front_6318

The Pro model is essentially the same hardware platform as the ISIS 1000 was, but with the latest v6.0 NEXIS software. Customers under support contract with Avid will have this software update available in their Avid Master Account and we can provide certified engineering services to come and assist you with your upgrade path to take advantage of the NEXIS platform.
You can combine up to 4 Pro engines in a single workgroup environment providing up to 80TB RAW capacity.

NEXIS | E2
Avid_NEXIS_2U_Front_6318_White
A single E2 can be configured with either 20TB or 60TB RAW capacity depending on media pack, and can be expanded with up to four other E2 chassis providing 1.6GB/s bandwidth and up to 240TB RAW capacity before you are required to add the System Director Appliance to manage your storage. The E2 has modular, hot swappable controller capabilities allowing for simple field replacement of hardware. Redundant controllers will be available soon and configured with a software update.
NEXIS | E4
Avid_NEXIS_4U_Front_6300_White
The E4 chassis provides the most flexibility and expansion capability as it can be purchased half-populated with a single 10-disk media pack, and gives the most potential redundancy options with two hot-spare drive bay options. Fully populated the E4 can provide up to 120TB RAW capacity and 800MB/s, two chassis can be combined using the embedded system director before you are required to add a separate SDA.
The E4 will also be available with a redundant controller soon.
NEXIS | SDA
Avid_NEXIS_2U_Front_6318_White_SDA
The sperate System Director Appliance is required for managing large workgroups where a more powerful head system is required to manage the increased potential file count, workgroup sizes etc. When you are running over 4 media packs (not chassis – media pack is defined as per 10 drives of any capacity) you are required to integrate the SDA into your system. So with the SDA you can manage 5-24 media packs, either as a combination of 24 NEXIS E2 or 12 NEXIS E4 (fully populated) with up to 1.44PB of RAW capacity.
It is a 2U appliance which will also have the redundant controller option soon as we as enabling high availability mirroring and failover options in multi-chassis environments.
