The year in production: Our highlights from 2016’s trade shows

The year in production: Our highlights from 2016’s trade shows

As well as hitting old favourites like NAB and IBC, 2016 marks the year we made our Media Production Show debut. I asked the production team to whittle down their trade show experience to just the most memorable, non-casino-related moments. Here are the results.

NAB 2016

We’ve been big Atomos supporters from day one, and getting to see the Atomos Shogun was definitely one of the highlights of NAB. We were happy enough to hear that eight of the Atomos lineup were getting a free software update to support HDR, but the Shogun Inferno’s combination of the most advanced monitor technologies (1500nit/10bit/HDR) with 4Kp60 over Quad-SDI, and playback and editing functionality for on-set collaboration made it a real standout for us.

See our full NAB coverage here.

IBC 2016

IP workflow solutions got their first major airing at NAB and have continued gaining traction ever since, with NewTek continuing to expand their NDI lineup, Sony partnering with manufacturers and standards bodies to develop their own solutions portfolio, and production kit manufacturers releasing IP-ready kit.

We knew IP was going to be a big deal at IBC, but we had no idea just how IP-based the show was. As we’re primarily an IT reseller, this was right up our street. Some of our team attended the IP Interoperability talk with the likes of AIMS/Grass Valley and SMPTE, and the theme was very much how the industry is working together to advance IP workflows, although the standards are still yet to be ratified.

See our full IBC coverage here.

Media Production Show 2016

Back in June, we were at the Media Production Show, demonstrating our key solutions and services around Avid, Blackmagic Design, HP and Rohde & Schwarz (as well as dishing out the pic’n’mix and playing splat a rat). Catch up with everything that went down on day one in this official video from the Media Production Show.

Zeiss talk new Batis lenses from NAB 2016

Zeiss talk new Batis lenses from NAB 2016

If you’re after the lowdown on all new Zeiss’s lenses, then look no further. We caught up with Zeiss’ Luke Tait who talked all about the shiny new Batis range and NAB 2016.

Jigsaw24: It’s an exciting time for Zeiss!

Luke: It is, there’s a lot to talk about.

So let’s get right to it, how does the Batis 2.8/18 fit in with the rest of the Zeiss Batis range?

Well, the 18mm Batis is the widest full frame prime lens currently available. With its extremely wide 99 degree field of view, it is well suited for astrophotography, interior and architectural photography.

Batis is a bit of an odd name, where did that come from?

Just like the other families of Zeiss lenses, Batis is the latin name for a species of bird. Batis (pronounced BAT-iss) is a genus of passerine in the wattle-eye family – it’s found south of the Sahara.

So just how important is the OLED display to show the focus distance and depth of field?

The OLED display is very useful as it gives information on the distance to the subject and depth of field. Once you’ve used it, you won’t want to go back.

How do you think the lens was received at NAB?

The lenses were received very well. There was a lot of buzz surrounding the lenses when we were in Vegas, from both photographers and videographers. We were very pleased with the warm reception we got at NAB.

What do you think sets the Batis range apart from other, similar lenses?

First off, the Batis 2/25 and 1.8/85 are the very first full-frame autofocus lenses with an OLED display. Not only that, but the new Batis lenses are built for professional use, with extremely durable construction and excellent sharpness. It’s everything you could want, and it’s pioneering a new era.

So, tell us, when can we get our hands on one?

The lenses have already started to ship!

You can find Zeiss Batis 2.8/18 lenses over at our store. If you want to know more on the biggest and best NAB Show releases, give us a call on 03332 409 306 or email broadcast@Jigsaw24.com. For all the latest news, follow @WeAreJigsaw24 on Twitter or ‘Like’ us on Facebook.

What are NDI Transit and Telestrator?

What are NDI Transit and Telestrator?

NewTek’s NDI IP protocol was one of the big talking points at this year’s NAB, and two of the key apps they released to work within it were NDI Transit and NDI Telestrator. Which begs the question, what are they?

NDI Telestrator

newtek_ndi_telestrator

Well, this one’s fairly self-explanatory. Telestrator apps allow you to annotate and add graphics to any video clip or still image, and they’ve long been a staple of the post-match analysis circuit, corporate communications and training.

NewTek’s version is touchscreen-friendly and IP-ready, giving you the ability to add standard graphics to an image, plus the ability to draw freehand over the top of your video stills. NDI Telestrator includes configurable paint and shape tools, colour and highlight options, and other standard visual elements, so you can either use it to add annotations or throw in sponsors’ logos to unlock new revenue opportunities.

NewTek Transit

NewTek NDI Transmit is production software that makes NDI sources from anywhere on the network available for use with compatible 3rd party software applications that support a webcam input, NewTek tell us. This will allow you to get a professional level video feed from inexpensive consumer solutions such as Skype, Google Hangouts and common conferencing software like WebEX and GoToMeeting.

According to NewTek, “organisations and enterprises don’t have to compromise on quality or flexibility with their video communications — with NewTek NDI Transmit, they can conduct professional-grade video communications with the consumer-grade and business-grade applications they use everyday. NewTek NDI Transmit is production software that allows you to replace low-quality webcam video with broadcast-quality NDI video signals by making any video source on the network available for selection as the webcam input for compatible third party software applications and streaming encoders.”

Moving from Avid ISIS | 1000 to NEXIS | PRO? Here’s what we know…

Moving from Avid ISIS | 1000 to NEXIS | PRO? Here’s what we know…

As you’ve probably heard, Avid have announced that they’re launching the NEXIS family of shared storage products and phasing out the ISIS range. The smaller ISIS | 1000 has be rebranded and given a software update to become the NEXIS | PRO!

For those of you who were about to buy an ISIS | 1000, have just bought an ISIS | 1000 or have based your entire storage setup around the ISIS | 1000, this might have been slightly unwelcome news, but actually the move to NEXIS seems pretty simple. Here’s what you need to know.

Are ISIS | 1000 and NEXIS | PRO hardware that different?

No. Actually they’re identical. The difference is that existing ISISes (ISIii?) run v5 ISIS control software, whereas NEXIS | PRO systems will ship with v6 NEXIS software. If you have an Avid Support subscription, you’ll get v6 NEXIS software as a free update via your Avid Master Account as soon as it’s released, effectively turning your ISIS | 1000 into a NEXIS | PRO.

But it’ll still say ISIS on.

If this really bothers you, you can order a new bezel from Avid, so that your storage has the right name on.

I’ve got an ISIS | 1000 unit in the post. Will I actually receive a NEXIS?

No. Avid are clearing their stock of ISIS | 1000, so if you have just placed an order then you’ll receive an ISIS unit and a NEXIS sticker to put on the bezel should you wish to do so. The ISIS | 1000 will run v5 ISIS software out of the box, and you can update it to NEXIS software via your Avid Master Account as soon as the update is released.

Can I connect NEXIS and ISIS | 1000 units?

According to the Avid FAQ, “You can simultaneously connect clients to both Avid ISIS and Avid NEXIS systems in your workflow using the Avid NEXIS 6.0 client software. However, ISIS storage engines cannot be physically mixed with Avid NEXIS storage engines in the same system to form one pool of storage.” NEXIS units can be added to your current ISIS VLAN.

Can I use NEXIS | PRO and NEXIS Enterprise systems together?

Similar to the above. PRO and Enterprise systems can’t be combined to create a single pool of storage.

But I can combine multiple PRO systems?

You can combine up to four PRO systems to create an 80TB pool of storage, but this pool can’t be combined with any of the larger NEXIS Enterprise systems.

Do other applications already work with NEXIS?
MediaCentral Platform applications do (that includes Media Composer, Pro Tools and Interplay), plus third party solutions including Premiere Pro, FCP X and EDIUS. NEXIS will work with Mac, Windows and Linux systems.

What protection do I get against drive failures?

Again, we’re going to hand over to Avid to field this one:

“With the release of Avid NEXIS 6.0 there are three Workspace Protection types offered:

Two Drive Protection – 2 parity blocks are written for each stripe of data – RAID 6 Fashion. This allows for two media drives to fail within a Media Pack (10 drives) before media is not recoverable.

One Drive Protection – 1 parity block is written for each stripe of data – RAID 5 Fashion. This allows for 1 media drive to fail within a Media Pack (10 drives) before media is not recoverable.

Unprotected – No parity blocks are written – RAID 0 Fashion. Any drive failure will cause data loss

IMPORTANT: A failed media drive should be replaced without shutting down the system.

Avid NEXIS is “Media Aware” – Only the actual media on the drives will be rebuild, reducing rebuild times.”

What should I do if I still have questions?

Get in touch with our Avid-accredited engineers, who can help you plan your move to NEXIS, or help you configure any new units you have one the way.

GB Labs adopts NewTek NDI for IP production workflow

GB Labs adopts NewTek NDI for IP production workflow

GB Labs, the world’s leading manufacturer of Network Attached Storage (NAS), today announced its adoption of NewTek’s open Network Device Interface (NDI) standard for IP-based production workflows for its range of high speed, media specific storage.

With NDI enabled, their Space product range will be recognisable as a source by other NDI-enabled devices and systems connected to a standard Ethernet local area network, exponentially increasing the number of video sources available for live production.

GB Labs’s Space storage range with NDI integrates seamlessly with NewTek’s TriCaster multi-camera video production systems. This allows production directors to pull from multiple data sources at speeds of up to 9,000MB/sec making this the world’s fastest NAS on the market. GB Labs’ storage has feature rich workflow tools built in to its core operating system making for a compelling workflow.

This new standard for live production IP workflow is bi-directional and backwards compatible with a large number of devices from top manufacturers already utilising NewTek’s open protocol allowing IP connectivity between devices. GB Labs’s Space storage range will be part of the NewTek Developer Network, the industry’s largest ecosystem of IP-enabled products using the same standard.

“The broadcast industry has been shouting out for an IP workflow solution” said Ben Pearce, Vice President of GB Labs. “GB Labs are delighted to be involved with NewTek’s NDI Developer Network as they lead the way in IP workflow solutions.”

“IP workflows look to revolutionise video production,” said Michael Kornet, executive vice president of Business Development for NewTek. “GB Labs is highly respected both at NewTek and within the industry. By GB Labs enthusiastically embracing NDI, best-of-breed products like Space will help make NDI the most widely adopted IP standard on the market that’s working and in the hands of customers today.”

NDI is now available as a royalty free software developer kit (SDK) for any company looking to establish IP workflows within their organization, or in production tools and systems they manufacture.

NAB 2016: NewTek’s NDI For Adobe Creative Cloud applications

NAB 2016: NewTek’s NDI For Adobe Creative Cloud applications

At NAB 2016, NewTek today announced NDI for Adobe Creative Cloud, a software plug-in with NewTek’s groundbreaking Network Device Interface (NDI) technology. The NDI integration enables users of Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Adobe After Effects CC and other Adobe Creative Cloud applications to send real-time video and audio to any NDI-enabled receiving product, such as production switchers or capture cards, across a standard Ethernet network.

With NDI for Adobe Creative Cloud, creators and producers can significantly accelerate their pre- and post- production pipelines, bypassing rendering and uploading of creative elements for a faster, more efficient delivery for content review and approval. It also allows teams in different locations to work together in one interface in real-time, making creative decisions collaboratively—and saving valuable time in the process.

The NDI integration for products in Adobe Creative Cloud also enables just-in-time editing workflows over IP for live production environments, such as news programs and live sporting events. Producers will be able to deliver edited content, including key and fill, directly from the Adobe Premiere Pro CC timeline into their production switcher for use on-air, without needing to render and push to playout servers.

“NDI for Adobe Creative Cloud transforms the workflows for Adobe Premiere Pro CC and After Effects CC users by making creative elements visible on virtually any screen or any output on their local area network in full resolution,” said Michael Kornet, executive vice president of Business Development for NewTek. “The creative efficiencies plus time and cost savings to be gained is tremendous and represents a breakthrough across the board in all traditional pre-, live-, and post-production workflows. We are so excited to see how Adobe Creative Cloud customers will utilize the NDI integration to achieve things in ways that until now were unimaginable.”

“Adobe Creative Cloud users appreciate our advanced tools which help them be their most creative,” Sue Skidmore, head of partner relations, Adobe Pro Video. “NewTek NDI for the Adobe Creative Cloud plug in delivers the efficiency that content creators need to help them do great work in today’s fast-paced production environments. It also opens the door for editors and producers who want to bring the streamlined power of Adobe Premiere Pro CC into their live production workflows.”

NDI, the new standard for live production IP workflow, is bi-directional and backwards compatible with a large number of devices from top manufacturers already utilizing NewTek’s open standard allowing IP connectivity between devices. NDI is now available as a royalty free software developer kit (SDK) for any company looking to establish IP workflows within their organization, or in production tools and systems they manufacture.
