Here’s why macOS Sierra is great for business

Christmas is still over a month away, but it came early for us this year. Apple’s newest system software dropped on 20th September, and it suits business users rather nicely. 

Entitled ‘Sierra’, the latest iteration of macOS boasts a ton of new features that’d get any Apple geek squirming, but it’s not just for diehard fanboys and girls like us. If you’ve been considering Mac for your business (or made the jump already), macOS Sierra makes it even better thanks to handy features that’ll simplify your day-to-day activities. Check out some of the best bits…

Universal Clipboard

Device continuity has become a fixture of Apple devices, and this neat new take on copy and paste was designed with that in mind. With macOS Sierra, users can copy from one Apple device and paste onto another – ideal if you want to store text from a document on your Mac as a note on your iPhone, for example.

Optimised Storage

If you find yourself stuck in a storage rut with nowhere to save all those documents and spreadsheets, Optimised Storage is what you’ve been waiting for. Sierra will help detect and delete unused files, and it’ll make more room for new stuff by automatically transferring rarely used items to iCloud. Don’t worry, those files will still be ready to go when you need them, Optimised Storage will just save you some precious storage space without the hassle of having to sort it yourself.

Tabs

If you’re working well into the night with multiple document windows open and you’re getting lost in the shuffle of it all, you’ve now got Tabs to alleviate your stress. You can have multiple windows open without them cluttering up your screen, just as you would in Safari, and it doesn’t just work for most apps on your Mac – many third-party apps are compatible with Tabs too. Now you can navigate between all your documents and spreadsheets in all their full screen beauty without having to click between windows.

This new bit of functionality allows you to open a video window from Safari (currently only on websites that support it) or iTunes and position it anywhere on your screen, then resize it to your liking. If you’re writing up reports or browsing email, you can drop that video conference (or Netflix series) you’re watching into the corner of your screen without it interfering with your other windows.

Siri

After debuting back in 2011 with iPhone 4S, Siri has finally found its way to Mac. Whether you want to send a message while writing a document, use Siri to dig out files for you, find the location of an appointment on Maps or set reminders for coffee, Apple’s intelligent personal assistant can lend a hand with almost anything. And it’s voice activated too, so you never have to raise a finger (unless you hit function and hold space).

Desktop and Documents

New with macOS Sierra, iCloud Drive can automatically save files stored on your Desktop and in your Documents folder. Apple reckons most users save the bulk of their files there, so this should be a welcomed feature if you’re switching between multiple devices. It’s easy to activate too – just pop over to System Preferences in the Apple Menu and select iCloud, then check the box for iCloud Drive and click Options. Once you’ve done that, simply check the apps you’d like iCloud Drive to store documents and data from – in this case, Desktop & Documents Folders.
