IBC 2016: GB Labs launch Echo 36 with complete failover

GB Labs have launched some exciting new high availability storage at this year’s IBC. Called Echo 36, it offers complete failover in the case of disk failure or “localised disaster”, a phrase we do not hear enough. Here’s the press release: echo_36_storage

Echo 36 is the big brother of GB Labs Echo nearline storage product. The Echo36 with our new Cloak DR software offers complete failover for power/disk failure and localised disaster. This makes Echo 36 a bulletproof storage solution for large broadcasters where data availability is paramount.

Two Echo 36 units working together provide unparalleled security and high availability with no single point of failure through storage and networking layers. Our unique Core operating system writes to both units simultaneously and in real-time, even when the units are up to 10Km apart.

Should one Echo 36 unit be completely destroyed, the same data is available in seconds from the other. Users on the network would be unaware because our operating system manages this transition over a single virtualized IP address, leading to no downtime and no relinking of media or other servers.

GB Labs adopts NewTek NDI for IP production workflow

GB Labs adopts NewTek NDI for IP production workflow

GB Labs, the world’s leading manufacturer of Network Attached Storage (NAS), today announced its adoption of NewTek’s open Network Device Interface (NDI) standard for IP-based production workflows for its range of high speed, media specific storage.

With NDI enabled, their Space product range will be recognisable as a source by other NDI-enabled devices and systems connected to a standard Ethernet local area network, exponentially increasing the number of video sources available for live production.

GB Labs’s Space storage range with NDI integrates seamlessly with NewTek’s TriCaster multi-camera video production systems. This allows production directors to pull from multiple data sources at speeds of up to 9,000MB/sec making this the world’s fastest NAS on the market. GB Labs’ storage has feature rich workflow tools built in to its core operating system making for a compelling workflow.

This new standard for live production IP workflow is bi-directional and backwards compatible with a large number of devices from top manufacturers already utilising NewTek’s open protocol allowing IP connectivity between devices. GB Labs’s Space storage range will be part of the NewTek Developer Network, the industry’s largest ecosystem of IP-enabled products using the same standard.

“The broadcast industry has been shouting out for an IP workflow solution” said Ben Pearce, Vice President of GB Labs. “GB Labs are delighted to be involved with NewTek’s NDI Developer Network as they lead the way in IP workflow solutions.”

“IP workflows look to revolutionise video production,” said Michael Kornet, executive vice president of Business Development for NewTek. “GB Labs is highly respected both at NewTek and within the industry. By GB Labs enthusiastically embracing NDI, best-of-breed products like Space will help make NDI the most widely adopted IP standard on the market that’s working and in the hands of customers today.”

NDI is now available as a royalty free software developer kit (SDK) for any company looking to establish IP workflows within their organization, or in production tools and systems they manufacture.

Thanks for making our So Ho Ho Soiree such a great night!

On Thursday 10th December we transformed our Soho service and customer experience centre into a Christmas wonderland complete with mulled wine, hog roasts, chocolate fountains and our best selection of Christmas jumpers for our So Ho Ho Soiree. We welcomed plenty of vendors and customers to celebrate with us, and boy did we have a good evening!

With a HP-sponsored Harry Potter themed room, more cocktails than you could shake a wand at, a magician and a candy floss machine, we hope our guests had a great night. So, on behalf of everyone at Jigsaw24, we wanted to say a massive thank you to you all for coming round to celebrate with us, and a special thank you to G-Technology, HP, Avid, GB Labs and Wacom for sponsoring our event!

Whether you came along or you missed it, here are just a few highlights from the evening. Remember, if you’d like to attend any of our events in the future, keep an eye on our events page for more information!

As guests arrived, they were handed a copy of our own Jigsaw24 Marauders Map before making their way through to our welcome drinks reception where mulled wine, prosecco and mince pies were on offer. The rest of the ground floor played host to a cocktail bar serving appropriately themed Christmas cocktails, a DJ and a hog roast.

NewTek NDI: What’s on the way?

NewTek NDI: What’s on the way?

NewTek’s NDI standard for video over IP was one of the big talking points at this year’s NAB Show, with NewTek releasing their own apps and tools alongside some corkers from third party vendors. In case you missed the kerfuffle (we can’t all get to Vegas on expenses, after all) here’s what we know about the key releases.

NewTek’s own apps

NewTek have obviously been hard at work on making their hardware range IP-compatible, and models running the latest firmware should cheerfully support the NDI protocol (give us a call if you’re not sure whether yours qualifies). They’ve also put together an SDK so that third parties can start producing plug-ins and apps. But they’ve also chosen to lead by example and put out a couple of apps of their own.

NewTek Telestrator is NewTek’s own moving image annotation app (and not, as the marketing team thought for one beautiful moment, anything to do with Fender guitars), allowing you to annotate stills and video to your heart’s content. Perfect for post-match analysis, training, and that bit of Strictly that they currently make Zoë Ball do on an interactive whiteboard.

NewTek Transit is an app that allows you to replace the customer-grade pictures you get from the likes of Skype, Google Hangout and various video conferencing apps with a crisp, professional quality NDI signal. If you have a compatible streaming encoder (or other third party production software with a webcam option), Transit will make any NDI video connection on your network appear as a ready-to-use webcam input, regardless of whether it actually is a webcam.

Third party apps

The first big third party announcement to roll out was that Sienna, whose production software pedigree is as long as it is impressive, had used NewTek’s SDK to produce NDI Source and a series of related apps for Mac users. This cunning suite of applications allows you to use NDI, which is a PC-based standard, on Apple computers and devices, and also brings key hardware from Blackmagic Design and AJA into the NDI fold. Once your device is running the correct version of NDI Source, you can connect SDI and HDMI sources to your AJA or BMD video interface and convert them to an NDI IP feed.

Adobe have also been quick to get in on the act, releasing their NDI for Adobe Creative Cloud app (or NDIFACC, as we choose to call it) over the course of NAB. This plug-in is available on a subscription basis from the NewTek store, and will allow you to display full res Premiere Pro and After Effects files on any screen connected to your video IP network.

“NDI for Adobe Creative Cloud transforms the workflows for Adobe Premiere Pro CC and After Effects CC users by making creative elements visible on virtually any screen or any output on their local area network in full resolution,” said Michael Kornet, Executive Vice President of Business Development for NewTek, when the app was first announced. “The creative efficiencies plus time and cost savings to be gained is tremendous and represents a breakthrough across the board in all traditional pre-, live-, and post-production workflows. We are so excited to see how Adobe Creative Cloud customers will utilise the NDI integration to achieve things in ways that until now were unimaginable.”

Storage

GB Labs became the first company to announce NDI-friendly hardware (although a slew of IP-enabled hardware is in the pipeline, ranging from cameras to convertors). Their Space storage range integrates seamlessly with NewTek NDI solutions, and just so happens to be the world’s fastest NAS, capable of pulling data from multiple sources at 9000MBps. So really well worth a look even if you couldn’t give two hoots about NDI (our professional opinion is that you should give several hoots about NDI, for the record).

Want to try these out?

We’ve got a full TriCaster 8000 IP demo system, complete with NewTek’s core apps, ready and raring to go. We even have our very own NewTek Certified Trainer to talk you through it. If you’d like to book a demo or take the unit for a test drive, just get in touch on the details below.
