NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces remote Bluetooth camera control for URSA Mini Pro

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces remote Bluetooth camera control for URSA Mini Pro

Blackmagic Design today announced a new open protocol for URSA Mini Pro cameras that will allow customers to create their own remote control solutions via Bluetooth. The protocol is being demonstrated at NAB, with the API and sample code anticipated to be released to customers free of charge in June 2017.

The remote bluetooth camera control test application and API will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2017 booth at #SL216.

All URSA Mini Pro cameras feature built in bluetooth, but it hasn’t been enabled until now. The built in Bluetooth will allow customers to send and receive commands from up to 30 feet away. To make the new Bluetooth support even more flexible, Blackmagic Design has developed a new open protocol and is publishing a developer API, along with sample code, for customers that wish to build their own camera control solutions.

A demonstration iPad app and sample code will be provided to customers that want to use this feature. The iPad app allows customers to create digital slate applications that feed metadata, such as scene, shot, take information and even full script lines to multiple cameras on set while shooting. Common remote control of camera settings like frame rate, format and shutter angle are all possible from the demo app.

With a fully open API and developer support for URSA Mini Pro Bluetooth, customers can go well beyond the demonstration app. They can build an iPad application to remotely adjust camera settings and motorized lenses while the camera is mounted on a crane. Technically skilled customers could even build an application that uses the camera’s built in DaVinci Resolve color corrector so that images can be graded live during a shoot.

New workflows are also possible. A great example of this is that customers can mount Blackmagic URSA Studio Viewfinders on multiple URSA Mini Pro cameras to create a live multi camera shooting scenario, however instead of connecting to a switcher, the iPad can trigger all cameras to record to their internal media with matching metadata. This means the media can be later edited using DaVinci Resolve 14 multicam editing to work as fast as live production, however with the accuracy of post production. That’s faster, lower cost and higher quality editing than was easily possible in the past.

“URSA Mini Pro has been received extremely well by our customers,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “Customers love the broadcast features and controls, the built in ND filters and interchangeable lens mount. Now, the possibilities are truly endless because customers are going to have the tools they need to build completely custom remote control solutions of their own design using the new Bluetooth support!”

Availability and Price

Camera 4.4 update, which will support the URSA Mini Pro bluetooth API and sample code will be available in June 2017 as a free download from the Blackmagic Design website for all existing URSA Mini Pro customers.

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces Blackmagic Duplicator 4K now with H.264

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces Blackmagic Duplicator 4K now with H.264

Blackmagic Design today announced the addition of realtime H.264 encoding to the Blackmagic Duplicator 4K. Now customers can choose to record H.264 for maximum compatibility with existing HD televisions and computers, or they can choose H.265 for delivering Ultra HD to the latest devices. Blackmagic Duplicator 1.1 update is now available as a free download from the Blackmagic Design website.

Blackmagic Duplicator 1.1 Update will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2017 booth at #SL216.

The Blackmagic Duplicator 4K lets content creators dramatically increase revenue because it gives them a way to sell content right after a live event, while attendees are still excited about the performance before, and after they walk out the door. Now customers can sell concert videos to fans as they leave the venue, to parents after their children’s latest performance or recital, after sporting events, conferences, sales seminars and more.

Blackmagic Duplicator 4K makes it easy to deliver multiple copies of content to customers the moment an event is finished. Blackmagic Duplicator 4K is an SD card duplicator with built in realtime H.264 and H.265 encoding. H.264 works with the devices customers have today, while H.265 is the new standard for delivering Ultra HD. The Blackmagic Duplicator 4K is the best way to deliver Ultra HD content that customers can actually view on their 4K televisions today.

The multi rate 12G-SDI connections let customers record in all SD, HD and Ultra HD formats, up to 2160p60. H.264 and H.265 encoding produces high quality video in small files that can fit on commonly available, inexpensive SD cards. Customers can even connect multiple duplicators together to make hundreds of recordings all at once!

Featuring 25 SD card recorders miniaturized into a single rack unit, the Blackmagic Duplicator 4K uses standard, common SD cards that are readily available, super thin, inexpensive and very fast. Cards can be used for SD, HD and Ultra HD video up to 2160p60 and are compatible with Windows 10 computers. With the addition of a USB adapter, SD cards can even be plugged directly into most consumer Ultra HD televisions for immediate playback of the video.

The built in H.265 encoder is so efficient that a one hour Ultra HD program can easily fit onto a very inexpensive 8GB SD card. SD cards are also easy to label and completely re-usable so customers can reformat unsold cards and record over them again at their next event. Unlike proprietary disc based formats like Blu-Ray, customers don’t have to buy a slow and expensive player. Blackmagic Duplicator 4K is the easiest, most compatible and cost effective way to distribute Ultra HD content to consumers today.

The front panel controls are designed to make duplicating content as easy as possible and feature 6 large illuminated buttons for record, stop, lock, append, menu and remote. The lock button prevents accidental interruption of recording during an event, and the append record button seamlessly combines recordings from different parts of an event into a single file.

This revolutionary new append recording feature is perfect for events that have natural breaks, like weddings with a ceremony and reception in different locations. Append recording makes it easier for consumers to watch the final program because they only have to play back a single movie file.

The Blackmagic Duplicator 4K features advanced, multi rate 12G-SDI connections that can record all SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60. For larger events, multiple duplicators can be stacked using the SDI loop thru and RS-422 deck control. This lets customers encode and duplicate to an unlimited number of SD cards in realtime. When recording is started or stopped on the first duplicator, the others automatically follow.

There is also an optical fiber SFP socket for adding an optional SMPTE compatible optical fiber SDI module when working in larger venues with long distance between equipment. Adding optical fiber SDI directly into the duplicators could be very useful when duplicators are set up close to the merchandising stands away from the production area so that cards can be handed to customers for quick sale.

“Blackmagic Duplicator 4K makes it possible to distribute content at live events the moment they finish,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “The addition of H.264 is exciting because it makes Blackmagic Duplicator 4K compatible with even more playback devices than ever. This gives customers a larger audience for distributing and selling their content!”

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces new UltraStudio HD Mini with Thunderbolt 3

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces new UltraStudio HD Mini with Thunderbolt 3

Blackmagic Design today announced UltraStudio HD Mini, the world’s first portable Thunderbolt 3 capture and playback solution with 3G-SDI, HDMI and analog connections for broadcast quality 10-bit recording up to 1080p60 and 2K DCI.

UltraStudio HD Mini has been specifically designed to enable customers to perform archiving, edit monitoring and live broadcast graphics tasks, while using the latest Thunderbolt 3 based computers for maximum performance.

UltraStudio HD Mini is available now for US$495 and will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2017 booth at #SL216.

UltraStudio HD Mini is a portable Thunderbolt 3 capture and playback solution that’s small enough to take anywhere and powerful enough to work on high end projects. It can capture and playback all formats up to 1080p60 in full 10-bit YUV, or up to 1080p30 and 2K DCI in 12-bit RGB. UltraStudio HD Mini features HDMI output for monitoring on a big screen television, dual 3G-SDI outputs for fill and key playback, plus analog audio and video inputs for digitizing and archiving materials from older analog decks.

This combination of connections greatly assist in workflows commonly used today. For example when doing archiving, customers need to connect to older broadcast decks such as Digital Betacam, Betacam SP and even 1” C format open reel decks. With analog component, composite and SDI inputs, plus a deck control serial port, UltraStudio HD Mini has all the features needed to connect and capture directly from those decks.

When working with modern editing and color correction software, such as DaVinci Resolve, customers can use the Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI or SDI outputs for high quality broadcast monitoring with perfect AV sync. When doing live broadcast graphics, customers can use the dual SDI outputs to output in real time both fill and key signals to downstream gear such as live production switchers. This lets computers output live graphics for keying over live action.

UltraStudio HD Mini features advanced Thunderbolt 3 technology that is capable of transferring data at up to 40 Gb/s. These data rates make it possible to capture and play back fully uncompressed video, leaving the computer’s CPU free for more processing tasks. UltraStudio HD Mini is also powered via Thunderbolt 3, so it powers from a laptop computer’s battery and customers don’t have to carry an external power supply with them when they’re on the road.

Designed for portability, UltraStudio HD Mini fits in ⅓ of a standard rack space so it can be racked alongside other equipment or used stand alone on the desktop. It’s also compatible with the optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel, which adds enhanced front panel controls and LCD monitoring so customers can preview video, see audio meters, timecode and more. Ultra Studio HD Mini is even small enough to fit in a backpack with a laptop and portable drive, making it the ultimate on-the-go capture and playback solution.

Customers can purchase the optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel which adds LCD monitoring and additional controls to the front of UltraStudio HD Mini. The easy to install design features push button controls and a bright color display for previewing video with audio meters, timecode and format information. It can also be used to adjust settings and change the source video input.

An exciting advantage of customers using the Teranex Mini Smart Panel is the LCD on the panel shows video and audio levels, plus status information. This status information shows input selection and video format used, as well as the frame buffer level indication. The frame buffer indication is a quality of capture and playback indicator and it will show the number of full buffers on playback or the number of empty buffers on capture. This means broadcasters can evaluate the performance of storage media while capturing or playing and have an indication of disk speed trouble well before it happens.

UltraStudio HD Mini supports more editing, design and video software than any other capture product. Customers get full editing compatibility with DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro X, Media Composer, Premiere Pro and more. It can be used to create stunning visual effects with Fusion and After Effects, and for color correction with DaVinci Resolve.

“UltraStudio HD Mini with Thunderbolt 3 makes it possible to capture and playback 10-bit, broadcast quality video anywhere,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “It’s exciting because of how portable and versatile it is. Unlike traditional cards that require a full size PC, UltraStudio HD Mini can be used directly attached to cameras in the field, on set, in the studio and suites for virtually anything!”

UltraStudio HD Mini key features:

– Thunderbolt 3 interface capable of up to 40 Gb/s transfer speeds.

– Thunderbolt 3 for bus powered operation.

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design dramatically reduces price of Ultimatte 11

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design dramatically reduces price of Ultimatte 11

Blackmagic Design today announced an immediate 60% price reduction for Ultimatte 11, which is available from Jigsaw24 now for only £8169 ex VAT. Acquired by Blackmagic Design in October, 2016, Ultimatte is the worldwide leader in blue and green screen removal technology for the broadcast television, commercial and feature film industries.

Now with this price reduction, customers can purchase three Ultimatte 11 units for a similar price to that which a single Ultimatte 11 cost when Blackmagic Design acquired the company. What this means is that customers can now put a full Ultimatte 11 on each camera and then use more cameras in a scene than was previously ever possible.

This also means that customers can use still frames as a background on each camera and leave the camera “locked off” so the result is customers can build their own virtual sets using multiple cameras, as more cameras on set eliminates the need to move cameras. This means simple still frame based virtual sets could be built affordably.

Ultimatte is known worldwide for delivering broadcast quality realtime blue and green screen removal hardware that is used in studios around the world to seamlessly composite reporters and talk show hosts into virtual sets. Almost every newscaster and weather reporter stands in front of a green or blue screen while delivering the news and weather. For the past 40 years, Ultimatte has been the industry standard hardware and software used to key these people in front of weather maps, stock charts, and other info graphics. In fact, many broadcasters use Ultimatte to place entire news teams, weather reporters, talk show hosts, sports commentators and more into completely virtual sets.

Ultimatte uses advanced 4:4:4:4 image processing and provides enhanced matte controls that lets customers accurately separate the subject from the background. Customers also get matte correction features, indirect and direct lighting features, spill suppression tools, edge artifact controls and more, all in realtime.

Ultimatte was founded in 1976 and has won an Emmy for their realtime compositing technology, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as an Oscar.

“Ultimatte’s realtime blue and green screen compositing solutions have been the standard for 40 years,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “Our efficient manufacturing capabilities have allowed us to drastically reduce the price of Ultimatte 11 by 60%. That means more customers will be able to afford more professional blue and green screen removal hardware for their studios than ever before!”

There’s also a built in LCD screen for previewing source and program video, a spin knob and additional buttons for menus and to adjust settings. Customers simply press the button for the source that they want to see next in the program, then hit the cut or auto button to switch sources, add effects, or even key in graphics.

When used with Blackmagic Studio and URSA Mini cameras, customers get a complete remote control solution that includes talkback, tally, color correction, camera control and more, without having to add any additional cables or proprietary control boxes. These cameras feature a built in color corrector that can be remote controlled, making it possible to balance camera color and create unique looks, all from the control panel. In addition, customers can adjust focus and iris on compatible lenses, change camera settings, and even remote control PTZ heads.

For maximum speed and flexibility in live productions, ATEM Television Studio Pro HD includes a free software control panel for Mac and Windows that allows multiple users to be connected at the same time. That means customers can have one person switching the program while another mixes the audio and another uploads or changes graphics, while another person remotely color balances and controls the cameras.

The software control panel features an intuitive interface with different pages for switching, managing media, mixing audio, and remote controlling and color correcting cameras. The Switcher page is modeled after a physical hardware control panel making it fast and easy for customers to switch between sources, adjust transitions, add upstream and downstream keyers, and more. The Media page lets customers drag and drop up to 20 RGBA graphics into the media pool and automatically upload them to the switcher’s flash memory so they can be recalled and used in realtime during a live program. The software control also features a 10 channel audio mixer that can be used to adjust and balance levels from all inputs, including the analog audio inputs. The audio mixer displays meters, has sliders for adjusting levels, and controls for turning channels on or off, using the audio follows video feature and more.

ATEM Television Studio Pro HD gives customers true broadcast quality transitions, effects and graphics. Transitions such as mixes, wipes and dips are done by simply pressing a button on the control panel. There are 37 included transitions, giving customers massive creative options because they can customize things such as border, border color and width, position, direction and more. In addition, there’s a built in 2D DVE for adding digital video effects that can position, resize and scale live video, all in realtime. ATEM Television Studio Pro HD has a built in media pool that can store 20 graphics that can be used with the two built in media players. The media pool uses flash memory, so images are saved even after the power is turned off. That means customers can create completely custom graphics to use in their own programs. In addition, there is an upstream keyer with full chroma keying for green screen shots so customers can add weather maps, graphics, or even virtual sets. The upstream keyer works with chroma, patterns, shapes and linear keys.

ATEM Television Studio Pro HD also features 2 downstream keyers for adding graphics, logos and bugs to video. Customers can use a HyperDeck Studio Mini with ATEM Television Studio Pro HD as a source for ProRes 4:4:4:4 motion graphics files with alpha channels. That means customers can get fill and key graphics composited over live video, or they can use motion graphics with alpha as transitions between sources, all in real time.

ATEM Television Studio Pro HD also includes a built in talkback converter for SDI cameras. The talkback information is sent back to the camera via the SDI program return feed on the rarely used SDI audio channels 15 and 16. When working live with a reporter in the field, there can be a slight delay that causes them to hear themselves as an echo in their headset. ATEM Television Studio Pro HD includes a new mix minus feature that sends back all the program audio except their own voice, so they don’t hear a distracting echo of themselves while reporting.

“The original ATEM Television Studio HD has been extremely popular with our customers who want a small broadcast quality switcher for live production,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “The exciting thing about our new ATEM Television Studio Pro HD is that it has all the same professional features, along with the speed of a full size 1 M/E hardware control panel for more complex, fast paced live events! NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces DaVinci Resolve 14

NAB 2017: Blackmagic Design announces DaVinci Resolve 14

Blackmagic Design today announced DaVinci Resolve 14, the biggest release in the history of the product, and an update that has been designed to be more than an incremental software update, but a complete revolution in post production. Blackmagic Design believes the new DaVinci Resolve will break through the stagnant toolsets used in post production, and offer a new path forward for the smallest as well as the largest facilities in the world.

New features include up to 10 times performance improvement, a whole new audio post production suite with Fairlight audio built into DaVinci Resolve, and multi user collaboration tools that let multiple people edit, color and mix audio from multiple systems, all in the same project at the same time.

What this means is that DaVinci Resolve 14 is like 3 high end applications in one. Customers get professional editing, color correction and the new Fairlight audio tools. All it takes is a single click to switch between editing, color and audio. Then the new multi user collaboration tools let everyone work on the same project at the same time, so customers no longer have to import, export, translate or conform projects.

DaVinci Resolve 14 dramatically changes post production from a linear to a parallel workflow, so everyone can work at the same time, giving editors, colorists and audio engineers more time to be creative.

A public beta of DaVinci Resolve 14 will be available today and for immediate download from the Blackmagic Design website. DaVinci Resolve 14 will also be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2017 booth at #SL216.

DaVinci Resolve 14 features a new high performance playback engine that’s up to 10 times faster than before.

In addition to extensive CPU and GPU optimizations, customers also get better threading and GPU pipelining, lower latency, much faster UI refresh rates, support for Apple Metal and much more. This makes DaVinci Resolve 14 faster and more responsive than ever so customers get incredibly fluid performance and more precise editing, even on long timelines with thousands of clips. Scrubbing and playback are instantaneous and there is powerful new acceleration for processor intensive formats like H.264, making it possible to edit 4K images on a laptop.

Legendary Fairlight audio is now fully built into the DaVinci Resolve 14 application itself. Fairlight is famous for being used at the world’s highest end studios for audio post on film and television. Fairlight is known for both its superior sound quality and its speed. Customers get a massive set of professional audio tools for recording, editing and sweetening, professional bussing, mixing and routing, and multi format mastering to 3D audio formats such as 5.1, 7.1, Dolby and even 22.2. The state of the art, super low latency audio engine is designed to work with 192kHz 96-bit audio and delivers up to 1,000 tracks with real time EQ, dynamics processing and plug-ins on every track when used with the Fairlight Audio Accelerator. Plus the new Fairlight audio can record up to 96 channels while simultaneously playing back up to 150 audio channels, while mixing it all in real time! There simply is no other software available with this level of dedicated audio power.

The new Fairlight audio in DaVinci Resolve 14 features a full multi track timeline for subframe editing of audio, down to the sample level. The mixer is designed to let customers create sophisticated sequences and has several main, sub and aux buses for mastering and delivering to multiple formats at the same time. Every channel on the mixer features real time 6 band parametric EQ, along with expander/gate, compressor and limiter dynamics. Clip time warping lets customers stretch or compress audio without shifting pitch. In addition, every single parameter can be automated, even VST plug ins, using a variety of automation modes.

In addition to audio editing, sweetening, and mixing, Fairlight audio in DaVinci Resolve 14 also includes multi channel recording tools that are far superior to those found in most editing systems. Customers can record voice overs or even an entire symphony orchestra while also monitoring video and multiple channels of dialog and sound effects. The advanced monitoring can handle buses up to 24 channels wide with customizable fold-up and fold-down for crossing between formats. Monitoring can be done on up to 16 different sets of speakers, including massive cinematic installations.

DaVinci Resolve 14 works with the Fairlight Audio Accelerator card, which gives customers up to 1,000 zero latency tracks and real time effects processing for EQ, dynamics, and up to 6 VST plug ins per channel. Even without the accelerator, most modern computers can still process more than 60 tracks in real time. In addition, DaVinci Resolve 14 can also be used to drive the entire line of Fairlight hardware mixing consoles, which makes working on complex multi track projects faster than any other system available.

The advanced busing and mixing architecture also allows multi language and multi format delivery to be handled simultaneously from the same project, dramatically reducing the time required to deliver final masters.

All this editing, color correction and audio post production power also means multiple people need to work on the same job, at the same time. This is where the revolutionary new collaboration tools are vital to the dream of revolutionizing post production. The new collaboration tools completely redefines post production workflows by supporting simultaneous editing, color correction and audio post. Assistant editors can prepare footage while editors cut the picture, colorists grade the shots, and sound editors mix and finish audio, all in the same project at the same time.

New bin, clip and timeline locking lets users safely work on a specific part of the project without overwriting each other. There’s also a built in secure chat client that lets team members talk to each other from within DaVinci Resolve without the need for an external internet connection. This secure chat is vital because most high end facilities are unable to use services such as Slack or Skype for messaging because they need to remain completely disconnected from the internet to ensure security against hacking.

The new timeline comparison tool makes it fast and easy to see differences and merge changes between two timelines by viewing a side by side comparison of every single change made between users. Best of all, DaVinci Resolve 14 works with the storage you already have. There’s no need to buy expensive or proprietary storage and servers to work collaboratively.

The new multi user features of DaVinci Resolve 14 eliminate the need for importing, exporting, translating and conforming projects. Customers no longer have to wait for a locked edit before starting color and audio work. Switching between editing, color and audio is just a single click away. That means picture editors, colorists, and sound editors can all work in parallel, making DaVinci Resolve 14 the fastest way to edit, grade, mix and deliver projects.

In addition to the incredible performance improvements, editors also get new slip and slide trim commands that make it easier to dynamically trim live on the fly during playback. They can now save interface layout presets, view multiple bins at once and open multiple bin windows. New marker overlays, audio only and video only edit tools, track colors, and subframe audio editing make it the world’s most powerful creative editor.

For colorists, there are over 20 new Resolve FX filters that make it easy to remove dust, fix dead pixels, warp images and more. The amazing new face enhancement tool automatically recognizes and tracks facial features so colorists can quickly smooth skin, adjust skin tone, brighten eyes, and even change lip color, all without having to manually select or rotoscope any part of the image. The face enhancement tool is an indispensable feature that colorists will use every single day. In addition, there are new stabilization, match move, and other image processing tools that give colorists more creative options than ever before.

Customers can add a DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel, DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel or a DaVinci Resolve Advanced Control panel for the ultimate high speed workflow. All controls are logically placed near natural hand positions and are made out of the highest quality materials. Smooth, high resolution weighted trackballs and precision engineered knobs and dials feature the perfect amount of resistance for accurately adjusting any setting. The DaVinci Resolve control panels give colorists and editors fluid, hands on control over multiple parameters at the same time, allowing them to create looks that are simply impossible with a standard mouse.

“The overwhelming success of DaVinci Resolve has been incredibly exciting. It has become the world’s fastest growing editing system and now we’re taking it to the next level with DaVinci Resolve 14,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “With this new version, we didn’t want to do an incremental update. We wanted to make a large leap forward and break new ground. It’s also much more exciting for the whole engineering team here at Blackmagic Design! We are really excited about how quickly editors are switching and we hope that a new generation of audio engineers will enter the industry. Together, we can all work to continue making it the best editing, color correction and now audio software in the world!”

Blackmagic Design also announced a price reduction for DaVinci Resolve Studio from $995 to only $299. It costs less than most annual cloud based subscription plans, making DaVinci Resolve more affordable to more customers.

The free version of DaVinci Resolve is also available with the same powerful new editing and audio post production features. The $299 DaVinci Resolve 14 Studio version adds the new collaborative multi user tools, over 20 new Resolve FX including the advanced face enhancement tools, 4K and 120fps project support, stereoscopic 3D, optical quality blur and mist effects, film grain, de-noise tools and much more. Best of all, DaVinci Resolve 14 Studio does not require a connection to the internet or a cloud subscription to work.

In addition, Blackmagic Design has also announced a new worldwide training and certification program, along with certified curriculum for DaVinci Resolve. Customers can learn at their own pace by purchasing the Blackmagic Design series of books, or they can take training courses online or in person at certified training centers. More details are available on the DaVinci Resolve website.

DaVinci Resolve 14 runs on all major platforms, including Mac, Windows and Linux, making it easy to integrate with existing systems and workflows. Customers running Red Hat or CentOS Linux can even build their own workstations using low cost motherboards, extremely fast processors, massive amounts of RAM and up to 8 GPUs for incredible real time performance.

Availability and Price

The public beta of DaVinci Resolve 14 is available today as a free download from the Blackmagic Design website for all current DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Resolve Studio customers. DaVinci Resolve Studio is available for $299 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide.

Blackmagic Design release new DaVinci Resolve Micro and Mini Panels

After many years of speculation and requests, Blackmagic Design have released not one but two more incredible control surfaces for DaVinci Resolve. The Micro and Mini will help improve users’ control and speed with Resolve in many different grading and editing environments.

The Micro

The DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel is a high quality, portable, low profile panel that features three high resolution trackballs and 12 precision machined control knobs for accessing all essential primary colour correction tools. Above the centre trackball are keys for switching between log and offset colour correction, as well as a key to display DaVinci Resolve’s full screen viewer, which is great for use with laptops. 18 dedicated keys on the right side also give you access to the most commonly used grading features and playback controls.

The DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel is perfect for independent editors and colourists that need a truly portable solution – great on set to create looks and evaluate colour and lighting, ideal for quickly grading video in broadcast trucks, great for education, and much more!

Blackmagic Design announce the new Ursa Mini Pro camcorder

Blackmagic Design announce the new Ursa Mini Pro camcorder

There were collective high fives in the office on hearing Blackmagic Design’s press conference in which they unveiled the new Ursa Mini Pro camcorder. Suited to film, broadcast, and studio work, they’re essentially positioning the new camera as three products in one, which will suit the needs of every shooter. And as it’s launched at a very competitive price point compared to similar cameras on the market, we think everyone else is going to be just as excited as us.

The Blackmagic Design Ursa Mini Pro features an interchangeable lens mount for quickly swapping out Canon EF, cinema PL, or broadcast B4 mounts, and they’ve even got a Nikon F mount on the horizon. The camera’s button layout has been designed for multiple users, with tactile feedback and the ability to access controls in two ways – a big boon for film.

URSA Mini Pro

Just as with the Ursa Mini 4.6K, the Ursa Mini Pro features a Super 35 sensor for higher than DCI 4K resolution and 15 stops of dynamic range. The Ursa Mini Pro can record 4.6K footage at up to 60 frames per second, and your footage is saved to dual CFast or dual SD cards (there’s an optional SSD dock if you need it, too). You can record in a range of formats including Cinema DNG RAW and ProRes 4:4:4 and 4:2:2.

Also announced in Blackmagic Design’s press conference were two new DaVinci Resolve panels, and footage from the Ursa Mini Pro will be well at home in DaVinci Resolve – you even get a full copy of the software included when you buy it! But enough gushing from us – here’s what Blackmagic Design said:

“We are excited about this new model because it really builds on the success of URSA Mini and combines the best digital film technology with the most advanced broadcast features and ergonomics available. URSA Mini Pro is powerful enough to be used on high end feature films and television shows, versatile enough to be used for broadcast news and live multi camera event production, and affordable enough for indie filmmakers and even students!”

Blackmagic Design Update: Brand new products announced

Blackmagic Design Update: Brand new products announced

Earlier this week, Blackmagic Design unveiled three new products designed to meet the needs of new live broadcasting services including YouTube Live, Facebook Live and Twitter’s Periscope. With both live broadcast and traditional broadcast in mind, the three new releases have been positioned as a way to bring broadcast quality production values to those involved in web production. Check out details of the new releases below.

ATEM Television Studio HD

When it comes to creating content, the fastest way to generate it is by doing it live!

The original ATEM Television Studio is a true professional switcher and it introduced people to the live television industry and was powerful enough to let them grow. But Blackmagic Design have designed a new model that takes those great features and adds to them, making it a lot more powerful by using the latest technology available.

ATEM Television Studio HD

The new model is called ATEM Television Studio HD and it’s a professional live production switcher designed for both broadcast and AV professionals.

It includes 4 SDI and 4 HDMI inputs so you can now connect up to 8 simultaneous sources, and it supports all SD and HD formats up to 1080p60! You get high end broadcast features, such as re-sync on all inputs, so you always get clean switching whether you’re using professional or consumer cameras. Plus, you get multi view output so you can see all
of your sources, but it now includes audio meters and you can route
 the views.

The most dramatic new features are the built-in control panel which means you can live switch right from the front panel. The new design is based on the Teranex Mini converters, so it fits well on a desktop or you can rack mount it. This new model also has powerful features such as a built-in DVE, built-in talkback headset connections, 4 program outputs for cameras that have mix minus support, flash-based media store, an independent aux output and analog audio inputs on XLR connectors.

Of course the new model still includes the ATEM software control panel, so you can switch your program by using the software control panel, or you can use the front panel and you don’t even need to use a computer!
There is a range of menus on the LCD that let you access all switcher features too!

Blackmagic Design are excited by this new model of ATEM Television Studio HD and believe that this new model goes way beyond what the old model can do. The best news is it’s only £785 ex VAT!

The new ATEM Television Studio HD is available now – head on over to the Jigsaw24.com store to find out more.

HyperDeck Studio Mini

This next product Blackmagic Design introduced completely redefined what a professional broadcast deck can be! HyperDeck Studio Mini is a miniaturised broadcast deck that’s only a third of the size of the current HyperDeck models. It’s so small and packed with features that it can do clip playback, record masters for live production, and it can even handle
 digital signage!

HyperDeck Studio Mini

Even at this incredibly small size, it’s still a true professional deck that records and plays back broadcast quality 10-bit video as ProRes files on commonly available SD and UHS-II cards.

HyperDeck Studio Mini is packed with features, including 6G-SDI for working with all formats up to 2160p30, HDMI 2.0 for monitoring, dual
SD card slots for non-stop recording and a reference output with built in sync generator that lets you daisy chain and synchronize multiple
 decks together!

This new model can even play back 4:4:4:4 RGBA ProRes files to separate fill and key outputs when you are working in HD formats! HyperDeck Studio Mini also includes industry standard RS-422 deck control, a built in power supply and ethernet with PoE+ for control and remote uploading media via FTP!

HyperDeck Studio Mini can be controlled by ATEM switchers, so it’s a perfect media player for running clips, animations and stingers into the new ATEM Television Studio HD. But the most exciting part is you can mount a ATEM Television Studio HD and the HyperDeck Studio Mini in a single rack unit so you get a live production studio and mastering recorder in a single rack unit.

With the Ultra HD HDMI output, ethernet with control and file upload as well as the built-in sync generator and ref output, HyperDeck Studio Mini also makes a perfect digital signage solution. You can hide it behind a wall mounted monitor or sync multiple units together for extremely high resolution sings. Imagine using 4 HyperDeck Studio Minis for an 8K
 digital sign!

HyperDeck Studio Mini is available now for £625 ex VAT. Check it out on the Jigsaw24.com store.

Blackmagic Web Presenter

Next up is the new Blackmagic Web Presenter, and this new product lets you make any SDI or HDMI source looks like a simple USB webcam, but because it’s professional video, the quality is much higher!

Blackmagic Web Presenter

With a new age of web broadcasting and streaming platforms such as YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Twitch.tv and Periscope, Blackmagic Web Presenter lets you use open source software tools such as Open Broadcaster and XSplit Broadcaster to open up global live streams from any location. Because Blackmagic Web Presenter looks like a webcam, any software works and you can use any platform such as Windows, Mac,
Linux and Chromebook. You can even make broadcast quality Skype calls for doing live interviews easily from any location, even with poor
 internet connections!

Blackmagic Web Presenter includes 12G-SDI and HDMI inputs that support all SD, HD and Ultra HD input video formats up to 2160p60 and then the video is down converted to 720p HD for streaming. Blackmagic Web Presenter will even lower the frame rate automatically when the software requests it due to low bandwidth internet connections. Using 720p for streaming means you get great quality HD, in 16:9 format but with the lowest possible data rate so the streaming is simple and easy to setup. Blackmagic say they’ve even streamed over a tethered mobile phone internet connection in broadcast quality!

If you add an optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel, then you get full controls and an LCD display with video preview, audio meters, video formats and the current USB frame rate. But what’s really exciting is the HDMI input features a re-sync so you can use the smart panel to live switch between the SDI and HDMI inputs right from the front of the Blackmagic Web Presenter. You can even use the HiFi audio input for music and the XLR audio input for a presenter microphone!

The new Blackmagic Web Presenter is available now for £395 ex VAT. Visit the Jigsaw24 store to find out more.

Blackmagic Studio Camera Update

Blackmagic also announced new, lower priced versions of their popular Blackmagic Studio Camera and Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K.

studio-camera-head

The older models of the camera included a large internal battery but feedback from customers said that this made air freighting the camera around with their live production system difficult due to new restrictions on batteries by the airlines.

Plus customers doing live production generally simply plug the camera into the AC outlet anyway. This update no longer includes the battery meaning customers can ship them anywhere and it allows the cameras to be sold at new
lower prices.

The new Ultra HD Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K model is now only £1399 ex VAT.

Ultimatte joins Blackmagic Design stable

Ultimatte joins Blackmagic Design stable

Blackmagic Design’s biggest news at IBC wasn’t a product – it was the reveal that they had acquired respected chromakey solution Ultimatte.

Blackmagic have a reputation for acquiring niche companies and using their existing products as a jumping off point to create innovative, low cost technology (see: DaVinci Resolve, Teranex, Cintel), and we’re excited to see how they develop the already impressive Ultimatte lineup.

ultimatte_12_blog

“I went to the Ultimatte stand after the announcement – very impressive stuff,” our Product Manager Meg said after IBC. “The Ultimatte 12 is available in HD and 4K, and one thing I really liked about the virtual sets was the fact that they are dynamic – you can have a moving image set up in the windows of the virtual set. On the stand they used some footage of the outside of the RAI centre that they had shot with a GoPro, and having it in the windows made the virtual set look a lot more active. And that the lighting settings include the shadows from the green screen really adds realism to the virtual set.”

Also impressed are the film and television academies, who’ve gifted Ultimatte with an Oscar and an Emmy. Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty, summed the firm up with: “For the past 40 years, Ultimatte has been the industry standard hardware and software used to key these people in front of weather maps, stock charts, and other info graphics. In fact, many broadcasters use Ultimatte to place entire news teams, weather reporters, talk show hosts, sports commentators and more into completely virtual sets.

“Ultimatte uses advanced 4:4:4:4 image processing and provides enhanced matte controls that lets customers accurately separate the subject from the background. Customers also get matte correction features, indirect and direct lighting features, spill suppression tools, edge artifact controls and more, all in realtime.”

We’re excited to see how this partnership plays out and, while we’ve not heard any official release announcements, we’re crossing our fingers and hoping that they’ll at least have a prototype by next year’s NAB.
