Many schools are now replacing their old whiteboards, and it’s easy to see why – newer interactive touchscreen displays and multitouch surfaces are a far more advanced way of getting a class engaged and flipping the classroom. From presentations to group work, they integrate collaborative ICT into the classroom on an unprecedented level, and for a similar price to a standard interactive whiteboard. Just think of them as a giant iPad that can be either wall-mounted or used flat on the desk.
While we’re big fans of interactive touchscreens, if you want to go down a more traditional route for presenting and sharing content in class, or interactive whiteboards and bulb-based projectors have previously served you well in your teaching and you want to carry on using them, we can advise on a whole range of affordable AV solutions to suit all kinds of budgets (and all sorts of school environments) – get in touch to find out more.
Pupils are naturally drawn to big, bold high-resolution screens, and the interactivity really helps them engage with their learning. If you have pupils with a short attention span who struggle to engage with topics, touchscreen displays can help. Multiple students can use them at one time, so there’s less chance to switch off as they’re engaged in learning full time. Our schools who have integrated touchscreens with a 1:1 iPad scheme have seen increased attendance because pupils have been so engaged!
Set pupils a group challenge and they can use the display to complete it – for example, a simple jigsaw puzzle that they would normally complete themselves can be turned into a group activity or even a side by side competition. Another option is for pupils to use an iPad to connect the display for mirroring (displaying their iPad screen on the touchscreen) and annotation.
Touchscreens include software that will help you achieve your learning outcomes and improve your teaching. For example, Clevertouch screens come bundled with a whole host of software to get you up and running right out of the box, with fun activities that cover off everything from maths and literacy to geography and biology, to music, plus powerful annotation software.
Unlike a data projector, a touchscreen uses an LED screen rather than a lamp. That means you won’t find yourself having to replace costly projector bulbs when they come to the end of their life. It also means there are no shadows obscuring your work as you walk in front of the screen! HD or now even 4K resolution means sharp, easy to read images and text even from the back of the room.
Once your students have created all their fantastic class projects, don’t just leave them sat on the server – start showing off students’ video, animations and presentations by streaming them around the site. Along with your own branded messages and announcements, it’s a great way to let your students’ hard work shine (as well as help develop your institution’s identity, and look seriously impressive to visitors on open days). Here are a few of the solutions we recommend…
We can tailor-make and install a full digital signage system or video wall based on your school’s exact requirements and space. We can also provide training to get staff familiar with how to create, update and schedule content, so they can manage the entire system themselves with very little effort.
With Apple TV, you can wirelessly stream video, images and presentations directly to your existing displays or TVs, hook it up with an HDMI cable, plug in to your classroom’s projector with a Kanex ATV Pro adapter, and even stream your Mac or iPad’s screen through Apple AirPlay to run your class through what you’re doing on your own screen. All from a tiny, portable box.
TrilbyTV is the number one digital signage platform made for education. Students can easily express themselves when given a platform that encourages student voice and ownership. Work smarter and encourage collaboration by sharing inspiring examples of best practice. We work closely with TrilbyTV to install their solution, and have seen that parents, governors and the wider community have all been impressed with the work created at school.
“We’ve really enjoyed using Clevertouch, we like the intuitive approach it has and the fact that it’s a very similar interface to an iPad that we’re all used to. It’s the interactivity that’s really led to learning on a higher plain.”
Andrew Pridmore, Headteacher, Elizabeth Woodville Primary
