A powerful studio upgrade to
Pro Tools HD Native -
Snug Recording Co.

Snug Recording Co. is one of the premier recording studios in the East Midlands, and has produced recordings for hundreds of local, national and international artists, films and television productions. When they were looking to upgrade their recording and mastering facilities, we helped provide them with a Pro Tools HD Native system with UAD2-powered plug-ins that would give the studio a diverse range of sounds, and hopefully help them take on more diverse business.

Why did they choose us
Snug’s old Mac Pro was starting to show its age, and Avid had just announced that the next version of their Pro Tools music software would not support the HD cards they were using. Rob Newman, Co-owner and Engineer at Snug Recording Co., decided to take this opportunity to upgrade their recording and mastering system to native processing, which uses the computer’s CPU rather than relying on outboard processing or DSP. The aim was to be able to take on bigger jobs, and also provide savings on upgrades in the long run.

What did they need?
Snug would need a new Mac Pro with enough RAM to deal with the native processing and make sure it was up to handling any future versions of Pro Tools. Rob realised they didn’t want to rely solely on the Mac Pro’s CPU for every job, so decided he still wanted a processing system that would just do the work of their audio plug-in software. Rob was looking for new audio interfaces and an expansion card to add extra inputs too.

How did we help?
When Rob first decided he wanted to upgrade the studio, he got in touch with Jigsaw24 for a consultation. One of our audio consultants and Pro Tools experts, Rob Holsman, helped (the other) Rob with the whole setup, providing advice on the system before making sure it all got delivered on time. The full new system included a powerful 2.8GHz Quad Core Apple Mac Pro with 24GB RAM, Avid Pro Tools HD Native software system, a Universal Audio UAD2 Quad card for plug-in processing and the Universal Audio Omni plug-in pack. We also provided two Avid HD 8 in/8 out audio interfaces and an expansion card which added eight extra analogue inputs to one of the audio interfaces.

What were the benefits?
Snug’s new system gives them the ability to take on more diverse recording and mastering work. It’s powerful enough to cope with demanding track counts and has enough processing power for clients needing larger sessions, and the system’s also ready for Pro Tools’s move to 64-bit, so to upgrade Rob just needs to replace the CPU. Snug also receive full tech support to reduce the risk of downtime.

“Installation was stress free [...] I’ve always had excellent after sales support, so felt confident that any problems would be looked into. This has minimised any studio downtime and stopped us from being unable to work and losing money.”

Rob Newman, Co-owner and Engineer, Snug Recording Co.
