Delivering beautiful digital signage at The Royal Hospital School

The Royal Hospital School in Suffolk is recognised as a beacon school in the field of mobile learning and online safety. They wanted to complement their school-wide iPad deployment with a site-wide digital signage system that would support the sharing and display of their content. TrilbyTV was the obvious choice of CMS to enable user-friendly upload, sharing and scheduling of many different kinds of content...

“As a 1:1 iPad school, we never have a shortage of user-generated content,” explained Head of Digital Development (and Apple Distinguished Educator) Hamish Mackenzie. “Over 700 students have access to apps such as Camera, Quik, iMovie, Keynote and Adobe Spark – all of which can output high quality media content.”

The school wanted to maximise the visibility of this content, so that staff, students and visitors could appreciate the high quality of work the school produced. Unfortunately their digital signage relied on a limited content management system that reduced the screens to read-only message boards. Searching for an alternative content management system that wouldn’t break the bank, they found TrilbyTV, a software-driven solution that would work with virtually any playback device, supported a range of content types, and could be licensed for an unlimited number of screens, so the cost would stay the same even if the school expanded its signage system.

“TrilbyTV allows relevant student work to be shared with audiences inside and outside of our school,” said Hamish. “It has transformed our school signage system from a read-only message service to a portfolio for students to share their learning experiences on.”

"We now deliver more personalised learning experiences for our students and allow them to demonstrate their learning and progression in many different ways. Often the output of their learning is visually spectacular."

Expanding the possibilities for cross-campus communication

As well as making their digital signage more flexible, TrilbyTV has opened up a number of new channels by which the school can share students’ work. “TrilbyTV allows video resources to be uploaded quickly and shared within our institution via QR code printouts,” explained Hamish. “It also allows the hosting and sharing of quick links of our media via social media channels. Tagging and playlist creation allows staff and pupils to curate content in to relevant sections for departments, houses, events or geographical areas of the school.

“We allow our Digital Leaders to curate and publish content, enabling a team approach to keeping TrilbyTV feeds fresh each week. Interspersed with this video content we use Twitter feeds and embedded Google Docs to display dynamic content pulled from a variety of sources.”

Staff in different areas have each developed their own voice on the platform, with the PE department sharing the rugby team’s tries of the week and motivational quotes, while the music and drama departments share performance footage and programmes.

There have also been advantages for admin staff: daily bulletins can now be shared suite-wide simply by updating a Google Doc that’s linked to the TrilbyTV system. “We have worked with TrilbyTV to enhance the functionality of the platform and they have responded by providing our requested features,” said Hamish.

Assessing the impact on teaching and learning

But how much of an impact on teaching and learning can a signage system really have? According to Hamish, the results are more wide-ranging than you might think.

“Since embarking on our journey with mobile learning in 2014, we have learnt a lot about the necessary elements required for success in regard to changing the way our teachers teach and our students learn. As a result, we now deliver more personalised learning experiences for our students and allow them to demonstrate their learning and progression in many different ways. Often the output of their learning is visually spectacular or demonstrated in a non-paper format. TrilbyTV allows an institutional content library to be developed, curated and shared with ease.”
