Bringing grading in house with Dan Moran and Coffee & TV

Since setting up shop in 2012, Coffee & TV have gone from strength to strength, handling VFX and post-production duties for ITV, Syfy, MTV and more. When they moved to their new facility in Broadwick Street, they were keen to expand operations, recruiting colourist Dan Moran and hitting up our team for help designing their Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve system.

Adding grading to the Coffee and TV slate

Coffee & TV started life in 2012 as a specialist VFX and post company, but soon found that clients were keen to trust them with more of their post pipeline than they could handle in house.

“We were outsourcing a lot of grading work for our clients so it made sense for us to try and keep some of it in house,” explained Managing Director Derek Moore. “But we also realised that Dan Moran was a rising star and we felt we could provide the perfect platform for him to succeed at the next level.”

While they initially considered a Baselight system, Derek told us that, “for us, it’s much more about the artist than the kit. Dan already had a lot of experience on Resolve, so couple that with its impressive power and pricing, and the decision is quite straightforward.”

“Jigsaw24 were extremely helpful in designing our new studio layout and making sure the Resolve would ‘play nicely’ with all of the other technology that was being incorporated. At one point, we had four different engineering companies connecting things together, and my fear was that there could be a lot of finger pointing if something didn’t work properly. But Jigsaw24 were happy to play their part in the bigger picture and in fact designed some of our other cable runs and monitoring solutions."

As the UK’s only provider of DaVinci Resolve for Linux and the country’s longest-standing DaVinci dealer, we were the natural choice for Coffee & TV when it was time to design and develop their system.

“The team from Jigsaw24 were really good, especially at the planning stage. Jamie was extremely helpful in designing our new studio layout and making sure the Resolve would ‘play nicely’ with all of the other technology that was being incorporated. At one point we had four different engineering companies connecting things together, and my fear was that there could be a lot of finger pointing if something didn’t work properly. But Jigsaw24 were happy to play their part in the bigger picture, and in fact designed some of our other cable runs and monitoring solutions.”

Reaping the benefits of Resolve

As well as providing Coffee & TV with a new stream of revenue, Resolve has had a positive impact on their overall work ow.

“We now grade in 4K as standard, so its speed is astonishing. Despite the images being ve times larger, the interactivity is just like grading at HD. It also has a great colour management system, which is going to become more and more valuable as we move towards grading everything in HDR. With so many delivery formats to deal with like Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG and then the regular SDR delivery formats, having a solid colour pipeline is a necessity,” Derek told us.

As well as using their Resolve system for grading work, Coffee & TV are increasingly exploring the software’s editing toolkit, and are impressed with recent changes.

“The additions and new features to this area have made conforming and nishing jobs so much easier. For example, we recently worked on a commercial that was shot on a notoriously tricky camera, but due to the massive improvements to the timewarping in Resolve and especially the ability to now handle ramped timewarps, it was a single click to import the whole timeline via an XML. It was so simple we almost didn’t believe it had worked!”

Expanding the Coffee & TV grading pool

Derek, Dan and the team are now so in demand that they’re considering adding another suite, but they may have to add a new VFX suite rst, as their grading work is actually bringing more customers into the company as a whole. “It’s also driving an increase in our other VFX work. When new grading clients come in to our lovely studio and see the atmosphere and how we work, they usually want us to do the rest of the job!”
