Apple Deployment Programmes will no longer be available from 1st December 2019. So you’ll need to upgrade to Apple School Manager before then to continue using the Device Enrolment Programme and Volume Purchase Programme. Here’s what you need to know…
Apple School Manager is a web-based portal that provides a one-stop-shop for IT admins to deploy Apple devices and create accounts (Managed Apple IDs) for your students and staff. You can use it with a mobile device management solution to configure devices and distribute apps and books over the air.
Apple School Manager offers all the functionality currently available from the Volume Purchase Programme (VPP) and Device Enrolment Programme (DEP) and more. Best of all, upgrading is completely free.
Upgrading is easy. Your IT admin will need to sign in to deploy.apple.com or school.apple.com using their Apple Deployment Programme Agent account, then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you upgrade, Apple School Manager will automatically receive the data from your DEP and VPP accounts, including:
Once you’ve upgraded, you won’t have access to the Apple Deployment Programme websites anymore. You can now use the Apple School Manager portal to access your data, provision apps, and manage devices and users. You’ll also notice that there are some changes to roles: Agents are now called Administrators and Admins are now called Managers, but their responsibilities remain largely the same.
Apple School Manager will then ask you for your school’s website to create your Managed Apple IDs (user accounts). For example, if your website is www.school.edu, your Managed Apple IDs will look like firstname.lastname@example.org. Agents and Admins with Apple IDs will have their accounts automatically converted into Managed Apple IDs.
We’ve made a quick video guide that contains all the best practice info you’ll need for upgrading to Apple School Manager, and information on how you can integrate it with your mobile device management (MDM) solution. Check it out below…
Remember, the Apple Deployment Programme websites will no longer be available after 1st December 2019, so make sure you upgrade before then to avoid disruption.
