Avid to issue temporary licences for remote working

Preparing to work from home? Worried about how your team will access your video and audio editing facilities? If you use Avid’s popular tools, we’ve got some good news for you that will hopefully make it easier to maintain business continuity through these unprecedented times…

Mike Laskey

Coronavirus continues to grip the world, with its impact on life here in the UK seemingly taking a greater toll day after day.

And as many companies encourage (or now require) employees to work from home, it’s important to ensure all staff are able to use the equipment they need wherever they’re now self-isolating.

For businesses in media and entertainment, this naturally presents unique challenges – especially if your editors usually rely on high-spec hardware and software located on site at your facility.

Thankfully, many providers are recognising the situation and offering short-term solutions to help companies keep working efficiently. Far from using increased demand as an excuse to raise prices, they’re stepping up to the mark by releasing free editions, trials or updates for their customers.

Avid is one leading name to announce it is providing such a solution “as an added measure to assist our community in adjusting their workflows to accommodate Covid-19 virus precaution”.

From yesterday, users who are unable to access their facility-based systems due to the impact of the virus can receive free 90-day licences of Media Composer | Ultimate, Pro Tools or Pro Tools | Ultimate, or Sibelius | Ultimate. (Similarly, students at institutions that use Avid products who can’t attend school can also get the same short-term licences.)

The move gives some peace of mind for editors and their employers, ensuring they can at least work productively between now and Friday 17th April without incurring significant licensing costs.

Avid have published a regularly updated Covid-19 webpage, and have also created a series of guides aimed at helping existing users of their products collaborate effectively in workflows that are likely to be unfamiliar and less than ideal.

The three guides – covering broadcast and news, Media Composer, and Pro Tools – outline recommended remote working solutions and feature further details, such as the web client bandwidth requirements for using MediaCentral UX over a VPN.

If you’re an Avid user, this is all welcome news. But what about all the other issues you need to consider for home working?

We’ve put together an article on easy-to-adopt, cost-effective solutions that can help you roll out devices quickly and ensure a seamless IT experience for your remote users – definitely worth a read if you’re expecting to close down your workplace in the days ahead.

You can also download our whitepaper on remote working, which looks at the benefits, the challenges, and the core equipment required to get started.

And RPS24, our Remote Production Service, is perfect for giving your creatives access to your production facility’s software from anywhere – it features turnkey solutions for straightforward editing, but we offer fully managed options for a more bespoke service, too.
