Prepare your #FutureTalent for… Experiencing professional software

The media sector is one of the UK’s fastest-growing areas of employment, and we’re on track to become Europe’s biggest media and entertainment market by 2025. But to stay on top, we need to make sure we’re equipping the next generation of animators, broadcasters, filmmakers, and journalists for the world of work by making sure they have the opportunity to work with professional tools...

Providing real experience of industry-standard software to GCSE and sixth form students can seem daunting if you have little experience of using professional editing tools, but it doesn’t need to be. When it comes to video editing software that cuts the mustard for professional storytelling, our Vendor Alliance Manager, Rachel, explains what the best software is to introduce your students to – and how you can get to grips with it yourself.

“Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Media Composer on Mac are great for GCSE and sixth form students wanting real experience of industry-standard software. They’re used in 90% of post-production workflows, and students and teachers can find lots of Adobe and Avid tutorials online to help them get to grips with the basics in no time.

“We see Adobe used a lot in marketing and advertising, because it integrates really well with other Adobe programmes like Photoshop and Illustrator. It’s a great chance for students who are doing multi-disciplinary projects to see how different applications work together.

“Avid, on the other hand, is designed for longer and more complex projects, with great media management tools and legendary stability. For that reason (and because old editors are creatures of habit) you tend to see it used in bigger productions, and it’s a great advantage for any student serious about a media career to have some familiarity with the Avid workflow.”
