Apple's latest Special Event in Cupertino was an absolute bonanza for tech fans. Not only were we treated to new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and an iPhone 11 Pro Max with new ultra-wide-angle cameras and Night Mode, we saw the launch of the Apple Watch Series 5 with Always-On Retina display, and a new entry-level iPad with a larger screen and support for Apple Pencil. There was also a lot of noise on the services front, with details of Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ pricing.
We've come to expect an iPhone release at this time of year, so had braced ourselves for updates to the lineup. Once again, we decamped to the boardroom with an inordinate amount of lamb sheesh and poppadoms to bed in for the live stream. Tim Cook was saving the new devices for later in the keynote, and instead kicked off with services.
Let's start with the real meat of the Apple feast – new iPhones. The base model, iPhone 11, is an update to last year’s iPhone XR. The new A13 Bionic chip makes this “the fastest CPU inside a smartphone”, and it also has “the fastest GPU inside a smartphone”. The battery has also been improved, offering an hour more usage than the iPhone XR, apparently.
It has an LCD screen and two cameras: a 12MP wide-angle camera, and a new 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. The front-facing camera also now offers Portrait mode, and slow-mo video, for even better selfies and video effects (slowfies?).
Apple have now followed the naming conventions of their top-end iPads and Macs, with a new 'Pro' version of iPhone 11. It comes in two sizes, the 5.8” iPhone 11 Pro, and a 6.5” iPhone 11 Pro Max, with an incredible Super Retina XDR display that's brighter and more colourful than ever before.
The A13 Bionic chip's CPU and GPU is up to 20% faster than its predecessor, so the iPhone 11 Pro can handle every task you throw at it. And with a full charge, iPhone 11 Pro offers up to four more hours than iPhone Xs, letting you enjoy all the capabilities of your new device for longer.
Most importantly, it comes in Space Grey, Silver, Gold or a beautiful new Midnight Green colour. We're already sourcing some colour-matched paint for the staff room!
The entry-level iPad has had an update, with the new 7th generation version getting a larger 10.2" Retina display and support for the Apple Pencil and Smart Connector, making it much more flexible for creative applications and general keyboard-based productivity. The A10 Fusion chip brings great performance, with a promised 10 hour battery life too, making the most affordable iPad in the range even better than ever.
The headline news for the new Apple Watch Series 5 is that the display is always on, and dimmed gently while not in use. That's thanks to new display technology which allows it to maintain an 18-hour battery life. There's also a new built-in compass, a compass app, and international emergency calls for the cellular model. And of course, more new straps, colours and cases.
We were introduced to the Apple Arcade subscription gaming service back in March, which promised to offer exclusive access to more than 100 games. The real news on the night was the pricing structure – Apple Arcade will launch worldwide on 19th September and cost £4.99 a month. We were also shown demos of some new titles like Annapurna Interactive's fun-looking rhythm action game Sayonara Wild Hearts, and Apple Arcade-exclusive titles like Konami's update of the classic Frogger for a bit of amphibian nostalgia.
Boxset addicts got a boon with the announcement that Apple TV+ is launching in more than 100 countries on 1st November, with a slew of new content every month. Subscriptions will cost £4.99 per month again, but excitingly, a year's subscription will be bundled in free with any selected Apple product! We're already looking forward to The Morning Show, Dickinson and For All Mankind. The Jason Momoa-helmed series See, not so much.
