Apple and the public sector: A perfect match

In recent years, Apple technology has become an increasingly familiar sight in the public sector. In fact, it’s been playing a key role on the healthcare front line, improving patient experiences and reducing inefficiency. But what makes it so well suited, and how can devices like iPad really make a difference?

One reason why Apple devices are so popular in the public sector is because of their security strength. With hacks and data breaches posing significant threats to councils, government departments, the NHS and every other body or authority, using technology that is as secure as possible is naturally very attractive.

“Apple devices come with industry-leading security and privacy features,” says LJ Turner, who heads up our public sector team. “File encryption is built-in. We’re seeing more and more demand for Apple products in the public sector from organisations who value their easy adoption, quality and reliability, and especially the in-built security to protect their users and the communities they support.”

LJ recently worked on our large-scale project with NHSX to deploy no fewer than 11,000 iPads to care homes with limited access to technology across England – and all in a matter of weeks.

As a named supplier on many public sector frameworks, including Technology Services 3, Technology Products & Associated Services, the Pagabo National ICT Framework, NWUPC Broadcast Equipment and Integration Services, G-Cloud 12, and Technology Online Purchasing Content, Jigsaw24 is in high demand – especially as we also hold the prestigious distinction of being an Apple Authorised Enterprise Reseller.

With NHSX, we needed to help vulnerable residents stay connected with their loved ones and digital health services while isolated during lockdown. iPad was an obvious choice. “Apple devices offer great performance and are incredibly easy to use, but they can also deliver a return on investment that gives the taxpayer true value for money,” LJ says. “In the end, it comes down to two things: quality and value.”

As LJ is keen to point out, the project with NHSX was a huge undertaking. “Every department in our company was involved; we all rolled our sleeves up and it was a really proud moment for us. But what’s most interesting is just how much users could achieve with iPad, and why Apple technology was perfectly suited to the task.”

For starters, ease of use was essential; the devices would be given to residents and staff who may have never seen a tablet before, let alone used one to set up a video call. iPad is renowned for its intuitive design and operating system – though we still enclosed a simple guide to help users perform everyday tasks – but is in a league of its own when it comes to pre-staging and deployment.

“That was a massive advantage,” says LJ. “A key requirement of the project was that the devices had to be pre-configured so they could be used straight of the box when they arrived at the care homes. Apple devices can be staged in exactly that way, and at one point our team was setting up around 750 iPads a day before they left our warehouse – no mean feat, but one that gave new users the ideal experience.”

The range of mobile device management solutions available for Apple devices can also provide tremendous reassurance. In this instance, we developed a bespoke platform built on Jamf and Apple Business Manager that would enable each iPad to be updated, locked or administered remotely, reducing the risk of them ending up in the wrong hands.

“We were also able to restrict app installs so users were unable to accidentally download malware, yet could instantly install the practical apps they would need for video calls or health service access,” LJ explains.

You might think all this functionality came at a higher price, but Apple technology actually cuts long-term IT costs for public sector organisations.

There’s also plenty of scope to use Apple devices for specific purposes across the wider public sector. In healthcare, for example, built-for-iPad platforms like Beagleboxx can make patients’ hospital stays far more comfortable by engaging, empowering and entertaining them, while solutions like Dignio can help healthcare providers build virtual wards and deliver telemedicine, remote patient monitoring and self-reporting.

Plus, with the help of an Apple Authorised Enterprise Reseller, Apple Authorised Education Specialist and Apple Premium Service Provider like us, public sector organisations can get the most out of your Apple deployment to boost your return on investment.

We can also provide flexible purchasing options from Apple Financial Services, as well as our own Device as a Service packages.
