With just over a week to go til NAB 2013, our inboxes are starting to fill up with announcements from vendors with shiny new kit to show off. One of the most interesting we’ve seen so far is Grass Valley’s effort, which promises us intriguing new alternatives to NewTek’s 3Play and TriCaster systems.
K2 Dyno replay system
The latest replay offering from Grass Valley, the K2 Dyno offers vision mixers a lower profile and a larger, gesture-control-compatible touchscreen than the previous generation. You can now hook it up to two external monitors rather than just the one, and have dedicated buttons for direct source selection – always a plus. However, the two biggest pluses are the addition of DNxHD support through the K2 Summit platform Dyno runs on, and the ability to network a series of K2 Dyno units and share channels between them.
Hook your K2 Dyno up to other units on the same network, and you’ll be able to access every feed on every device in realtime, so you can access more feeds from the same amount of hardware. Combine this with simple drag and drop operation, an intuitive interface and the promise of new metadata tools, and we reckon Grass Valley are on to a winner.
The other newbie we’ll be looking out for in Vegas is GV director, which claims to combine the functionality of a switcher, video server, graphics generator and multiviewer into “a sophisticated, yet easy to use and deploy nonlinear production platform that allows all creatives to make compelling productions using live sources, clips, transitions and more without complexity or setup time.” The trick here is that GV Director allows technical directors to build a programme on their laptop, then simply transfer them to GV Director via USB and send them live. If you’re lucky enough to be heading to NAB, you can see the workflow in action on stand SL206.
