Pre-BVE, we were working with Avid on 4K test footage and kept running into record time limits with our XQD cards. Tragic! Like any sensible person, we switched to an Atomos Shogun so that we could record for longer and shoot at a higher bit rate. Unlike any other people, we managed to get a pre-release version of the Shogun with DNxHR support, so we could shoot 4K directly to the latest flavour of DNx.
The footage looks great. Special mention has to be made of the Shogun’s monitor, which was excellent and complemented the FS7’s onboard viewfinder. You can see the results at the Avid stand throughout BVE – the Shogun unit and FS7 are also on Atomos’ stand.
It doesn’t stop there. Riding high after touching world-first technology, our M&E team have launched a show promo that gets you a free Atomos Shogun when you buy the Sony FS7. We have one left in stock, so all our BVE orders are going into a hat and one lucky winner will get their order shipped on Friday – the rest of you will get yours as soon as the next wave of FS7s hits our warehouse.
The FS7 itself is due a firmware updated in March, along with several other Sony cameras. This will see it gain support for ProRes (including ProRes 422 and 422 HQ, so long as you don’t use any special recording modes), 4K XAVC-I and 4-channel audio input and recording, so you can use the internal and external mics simultaneously to record from different sources. Here’s a quick rundown of the newly-supported frame rates and formats:
To get your hands on the FS7/Shogun combo, order on our site now, while it’s just £7199 ex VAT and we’ve got stock to hand (don’t worry if we run out – anyone who gets their pre-order in before the end of the expo will have their name noted and be sent a free Shogun with their FS7 when it ships).
