Weekly design inspiration: Christmas special

Like all the best TV shows, we’ve brought back our design inspiration article for a one-off Christmas special. Our resident design team have put together their best festive craft ideas, and favourite pieces of seasonal marketing to help you out if you’re in need of a little inspiration! They’ll have you 3D printing tree ornaments and designing your own wrapping paper in no time…

1. 3D printed Christmas ornaments

Not content with 3D printing your own whistles? We’re using our MakerBot Replicator 5th generation desktop 3D printer to design and print our own tree decorations. We started with some simple snowflake ideas, before moving on to more complicated designs like a zebra pulling an orange sleigh. We’ve been researching our way through Behance for design ideas and stumbled across this delightful peacock bauble. We love the intricate design, and we’ll certainly be attempting to make our own shortly!

2. Designing wrapping paper using Adobe Photoshop

Yep, this year we’ve decided to design and make our own Christmas gift wrap. Using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign we’ve been pulling together all our favourite Christmas elements to make a super festive montage to wrap our gifts in. Again, we looked for inspiration on Behance, and found this lovely example from Illustrator Shikha Nambiar’s surface pattern designs – so cute!

3. The best Christmas card designs

Every year we say we’re going to make our own Christmas cards, and this year is no exception! And we will, thanks to this selection of 10 greeting card designs we found on Creative Bloq. Made up of a series of letterpress, illustration and vector artwork we can’t wait to get started on ours (replacing the red for orange, obviously).

4. Christmas gingerbread haus

We love a good bake, and this year we’re up to the challenge of baking and building our own gingerbread house. Now, we don’t expect to be anywhere near as good as Gianna Motisi, but we’ll give it a go! His stunning gingerbread creations feature the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Egyptian pyramids and a wonderfully festive house complete with jelly chimney pots and a chocolate pretzel garden.

5. John Lewis Christmas ad

We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to end our Christmas special design inspiration than looking at the John Lewis advert for 2015. Even the scrooges among the team had to admit that John Lewis have done a cracking job this year with their advert. Who knew a man looking through a telescope could move us to tears?
