Weekly design inspiration: Schools

As the short week draws to a close, it’s time for our weekly design inspiration roundup. This week’s theme saw us collecting back-to-school work, as a nod to the start of another academic year. We’ve been feeling inspired by blackboards, famous school fiction and the humble lunchbox…

Bart’s Blackboard

We’re kicking things off with some classic Simpsons, and looking at the complete collection of blackboard messages from the title sequence. We could have happily spent the entire afternoon going through all 23 seasons’ worth of messages, and really enjoyed the contrast in animation over the years. A great one for keeping both copywriters and designers amused.

Famous fictional schools infographic

Next up, we’ve got a fantastic infographic from Rayburn Tours, illustrating beloved fictional schools (many of which we’d grown up with). While we loved the nostalgic thoughts this instilled in us, we were all equally impressed with the simple layout and icon-based illustrations.

Japanese blackboard artwork

We’re showing our age a bit here, by reminiscing about our school days and the good old chalk and blackboard – a trend still going strong in Japan. What we’ve found is this collection of blackboard artwork created between classes in schools throughout Japan. 249 students took part, creating 50 submissions of the intricate artwork. Here are just a few of our favourite examples.

Lunchboxes from the 70s

Our favourite piece this week is a collection of lunchboxes from the 70s. We learnt that our graphic designer Liana, had a serious amount of lunchbox envy, having never been allowed to have one as a child. So, this one’s for you Li – stay strong.

Books build children project

Our final piece for the week is a charming construction piece from Yokohama city librarians. The purpose of the project was to recruit more librarians and promote the value of books, and naturally this was done by building statues out of books. We can’t knock the marketing strategy here, as the campaign saw applications increase by 150% compared with the previous year.
