While we’ve been away consuming our own body weight in chocolate and enjoying a few Easter celebratory wines, we’ve also found time to pay tribute to national ‘Save the Elephant Day’ (coming to you on the 16th April). In tribute to this bold and fierce animal, we’ve dedicated our design inspiration to the handsome beast. Here’s the elephant in the room in the form of childhood book characters, beer and poo…
Poo Poo Paper
Always good to start with a nice mature piece. First up, we’re looking at stationery and paper products made from poo. If you’re looking for an eco-friendly gift for that special someone, why not visit poopoopaper.com and treat them? Their poo of choice comes from fibre-eating vegetarians like the elephant, which incidentally makes a fantastic loo roll – who are we to judge?
Elmer the Patchwork Elephant
Last summer, we celebrated 25 years of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, the beloved children’s fictional book character illustrated by David McKee. Here, the Guardian pays tribute to the cheeky chappy with a collection of his most memorable adventures. Even now, as a fully grown adult (cough) Elmer is just as lovable and wonderful as he was when I was a child. It’s easy to see why these books were such a success – Happy 25th Birthday Elmer!
The history of Walt Disney’s Dumbo
Everyone’s favourite flying elephant burst onto the scene in 1941 courtesy of Walt Disney, and has remained in our hearts ever since. Walt Disney himself stated that he wanted to make Dumbo his most emotional piece of work to date, and with the exception of Bambi, we think this still is. So, naturally, we loved Robert Siegel’s tribute detailing the history of Dumbo. It’s the ears; no one else could look that cute with those big tabs.
Beer packaging redesign
Jan Baca has done a clever concept design of his favourite Belgian beer, Delirium, which we particularly enjoy. His designs heavily feature bright colours and a jovial looking elephant who seems to have enjoyed one too many Deliriums himself! We’ve also been enjoying the work of One Horse Town Illustration Studio, who have done a similar thing and created a concept design of Coney Island brewery’s selection of beers. Again, great elephant work!
This amazing artwork from French illustrator Yo Az had to be featured in our roundup. His ‘animal’ project consists of a series of creatures, made up of tiny shapes (which look kind of like Meccano parts). While his owl and lion are stunning, our favourite is the elephant. In a weird way, it looks slightly like a more colourful Darth Vader mask.
